Hi, I've just finish setting up my 175 gallon fish tank. Its going to be a reef tank. I currently have two tomato clowns. I like to put some tangs in ; I was wondering how many mid size tang and what kind I can house. Any Suggestions?

I am no help here, but for starters I like Powder Blue Tangs and Purple Tangs. Is there any that you're interested in?

To be conservative, I'd go with about three mid-size tangs in a 175. Just remember that even mid-size tangs get large and need lots of space. And try to choose from different Genus to avoid fighting problems, like one Acanthurus, one Zebrasoma and one of the Nasos.

Do a little research, or ask here, to find out which are more aggressive (like Nasos/lineatus) and plan to stock them last. Also, it's best to wait at least 6 months before adding any tangs to a new tank. They are much more sensitive to water problems than most other fish, and a more mature tank will help them a lot.

I've been stocking the tank since last month.

3 Yellow Tang
2 Neon Gobie
1 Diamond Gobie
1 Sailfin Tang
1 Bartlett's Anthias
2 Tomato Clown
1 Bicolor Dottyback
1 Yellow Longnose Butterflyfish
1 Orange Tip Tang
1 Magificent Foxface
1 Blue Sapphire Damselfish
1 Blue Hippo Tang

Is that too much fish? The LFS talk me into getting 3 yellow tangs together and said haven't fought in their tank.. so far the tangs seem peaceful with occasional chasing.

I'm in the process in setting up my 55 gal refug and putting in some sand and macro algae. Hoping that will solve me problem if I'm overloading the tank.

A good skimmer could handle the bioload, but I don't think that's the real problem...

I count 16 fish, 6 of which are tangs, without quarantining anything, added into a tank that's only been up a bit over two weeks (according to your post dates). I wish you the best of luck, but honestly I'd be surprised if you don't have problems here in the near future...

Personally, I wouldn't put more than 2 or 3 tangs in a tank this size and I'd have avoided multiple tangs of the same species (unless I was adding Convict Tangs). I would also be concerned about the dottyback and the damsel harassing other small/peaceful fish like the gobies (or future additions).

JMO of course.

thanks for the advice,

the dottyback and damsel seems to be two of the shyest fish in the tank they tend to hide around in the rocks.

Also with all these tang, I read somewhere a good food source is nori. How often should I feed them nori vs. mysis shrimp.

Ive been feeding nori once a day then I would feed frozen mysis shrimp every other day. When i feed the nori I would drop a few sinking pellets for the goby and the shrimps.

Heh - give it time. Once established/mature they can get very nasty.

Sounds fine to me. Spirulina flake is a good tang food too.

I wouldn't worry about the yellow tangs. Provided that they were small and all introduced at the same time you should be fine.

Personally I'm with Chris. I would have added 4 tangs of different species, like yellow, convict, achilles, clown
