I have my pink pulsating xenia that is growing like a weed. I dont want it to get out of control so was wondering if i can slice it with a razor blade without any ill effects to the tank? I am thinking of about 8 pieces as of right now to cut. If i recall once cut you can't re-attch them either right?

Thanks in advance.

I got rid of my elengata plaque a long time ago by pealing it off the rock. I would use a razor to get the edge up and slowly peal it off the rock. Any remaining tissue needs to be kalkpasted t ill it off or it will just grow there. I was flushing it down the toilet at that point there was so much of it. I think certain types of xenia are best grown in the sump for filtration.

The best way to fight Xenia is to put it in my tank... I tried on a few occasions to get xenia to grow but died after a few days. Can't figure it out... everyone says should be easy... maybe too much water movement... the other corals are growing just fine :)

No. It's not that. Stuff is a pain because it gets everywhere but on the positive side, the pulsing dull pink stuff that I have, doesn't seem to upset the coral. They don't seem to notice it.

You can cut the main stalks off with a razor blade and throw that away. There will be some slime released into the water and that does not seem to bother anything. After that I would wait a day and then use a toothbrush to get the base of the stalk off the rock. If you do not get every last piece off then it will regrow, that may not be a horrible thing though as long as you keep it in check.

Hey donni Ill take some off your hands neighbor. Is there anything you would want to trade it for? Zenia is hard to get in Jacksonville. Apperently there is a small community of rich guys here that buy up whatever they can in large quantities. Some guy practically bought the whole inventory of a store here over the weekend. Totalled 5 grand.

So your pink xenia can grow next to other corals with no ill effects???? That was my biggest concern..

No ill effects. I try and keep it from growing too close to frags so it doesn't shield them from flow and light or grow on them I guess :). But unlike any other softie I have owned, it doesn't bother other stuff with contact.

Five, ten, fifteen, twenty. You could give it to a local buddy, or get a free bucket of salt at the LFS. I like to be the nice guy to but you have to draw the line somewhere. 30,50 or 70 bucks says alot to me.

hack it off with a blade. it will be fine. trade it in at the LFS. but Ben is right about making sure you got it all off. i had a small piece of xenia that believe it or not, got sucked into a powerhead and was so mangled it was un-recognizable. i just turned the powerhead off and picked it out. i placed the "carcass" on a rock and it fell into a hole in it. 2 weeks later here it comes! 8O tough little suckers!

To control growth, place the xenia on a rock that is high with respect to surrounding rocks, and with nothing within reach of the xenia. Xenia seems to always want to move upwards, never downwards and hardly ever sideways except to spread out when density gets too great.
To remove it from an unwanted position, place some rubble around it and it's need to go upwards cause it to climb onto the rubble, which then can be taken to an LFS or given away to someone. It leaves no residue behind. So just continue until it's all off where it's not wanted.
It's a weed, but it makes me a lot of money every year, helping to defray the costs of maintaining my habit.
