Is it just me or does everybody have the same situation as me? You put the heater in water - let it adjust to temp, then plug it in, and set to 79 degrees, You come back and the water is at 88? so you turn it down until you get the water at 79 but the dial says 71 on the heater???? I have 2 that are like this a 50 watt and a 150 watt, both have the do not submerse past this line on them - so they are newer heaters- Somehow I just don't feel good about a heater that says it should be 79 but heats the water up to 88.

The heaters have always said that about the water and submersing on them. Same reason my bunker gear at work says never to wear it in a fire.

I have always used ebo jager heaters in the past. They were always reliable for me and I still have all my old ones. However a little while ago (maybe a couple years I can't really remember) they were bought out and being made by someone else (for some reason Eheim comes to mind). Perhaps this is the reason for the issues now, though I gotta admit I haven't heard anyone else mention them.

Mostly wondering about the dial that you set the heater to a certain temp but it gets the water like 8 degrees hotter than what the dial says - any one else have the same problem?

Give the manufacturer a call and see what gives. Maybe it's just defective and they'll send you a new one.

but once you get them set they are rock solid huh? I sent a e-mail to eheim and asked them about it.....probably take 3-4 years to hear back from them.

You're supposed to be able to recalibrate the dial, which is major PITA to do. They once were the best heaters on the market, but yes, something went wrong when Eheim acquired them.

There should be a statement that say the number is not in degree F or degree C, but relative number not related to any scale. They be better off printing A, B, C etc on the dial.

The old ones from back ten years or so were excellent heaters.
There was a change before Eheim bought it and that's when they first went to the blue color on top.
I've had many failures since then, one right out of the box, with many only about 6 months to 2 years old. The warrantied ones you get replaced, but the lost stock from the heater sticking on and cooking the tanks are not covered.
I have 14 of these, two are the original "good" ones, (a third original died after nearly 10 years) the rest are the blue top ones that don't last and have a much higher failure rate than the original ones.
I'm gradually replacing them but haven't decided for sure what the main heater will be for me just yet. (Leaning towards Rena of which I have four that I guess would be near the 2 yr mark with no failure yet)
