Hey Brust, I've seen those or something very similiar in operation. I advise you to look elsewhere. The skimmer is not very powerful, has a small reaction chamber, a terrible pump (anything Rio should be avoided), and works off technology that IMO has been surpassed many years ago. Consider ASM or Octopus Skimmers (www.octopusskimmer.com) for economical skimmers that will run circles around the one on eBay.
That refugium looks fine, though you can probably custom build or DIY one for about the same price. The one thing I don't get about that design is how the manufacturer placed the baffles.
Do you have your tank yet? If not, I highly recommend you get a reef-ready overflow setup instead of using hang-on U-tube siphon overflows.
Thats kind of what I figured with the cost of the refugium versus a DIY. Do you know of any good DIY plans available?
I have 75 gallon that I plan on drilling for the overflow and creating a custom overflow box in the back corner of the tank. I used to have an old 135 gallon tank and I fought with the U tubes on it all the time. Never again!
Refugiums are simple (or at least they should be ). You basically just need a rigid container of water; acrylic is probably the easiest to work with. A series of baffles may be used on the return side, but it isn't necessary (you can simply have water flow out from a hole that is drilled higher then the substrate level). Other then mounting a light over the refugium, there is nothing else to it. 8)
