If it's an open, 3-sided canopy, two would be fine. If it's enclosed, especially at the top, you'll probably want four.

Cut the holes for 4 but install two fans with grills and two grills w/o fans. If you need to add more just add them. The grills are cheap. On my new tank I have holes cut for 4 fans, but will be starting with 2. Mine are all hidden so I did not put grills on the open holes.

I got three 10 inch fans on my setup. 10 dollars at walmart, mounted onto the wall.

800 watts of MH and 440 watts of VHO.
