Howdy y'all! My name is Brian and I'm writing to you from Houston, TX. I've been a SW reef keeper for just a little over 4 years now. I'm very interested in on-line reefing communities and how they function. I'm doing a little bit of informal research and I have a question for anyone who wants to respond.

Of the threads that you read, what percentage do you actually post a reply? (Please don't count lounge/off topic or buy/sell/trade forums).

If you see this poll on another reef website, please do not answer again.
Feel free to add a comment on WHY you reply to the percentage you do (Some examples why would be: like to help, don't know information, not interested in replying).

Cheers!

Brian

I like to help but only respond if I have personal knowlege of the topic in question. If I only know of a refference, I might direct the person to seek help from that referrence but I make it a point to post only on known topics that I have delt with personally.

I answer in almost all the threads that I read, which is why I voted 76%-90%. Being new to the hobby, some post either doesn't concern me or I can not possibly answer them. That doesn't mean that I do not read any threads that I can not answer. I read the ones that interest me, mainly the ones that are either a "help me please with that" or something that will be useful to me in the future. Otherwise, I stay quiet. When I do answer a thread, I make darn sure I know what I am taking about and that my information is accurate as far as I know. I sometimes search the web for answers and will go as far as making a long-distance phone call to get an answer to my fellow aquarists.

For me, it's a way of giving back a bit of all that I receive from this forum and its great community. I do what I can, and try my best.

I only read certain topics (non-descriptive title usually will not attract me), and of those that I read, I think I replies to less than 10% of them. I usually only replies when I can contribute to something, or have someone to insult.

Thanks for the responses everyone! And the humor :) browncj7, lets talk about your inferiority complex :) Seriously though, by your comment about inferiority complex, was that just a joke, or were you referring to some other reason?

I went for 31-40. I typically only reply when I see a thread that is dancing around a topic I have a good bit of experience with or else I've done sufficient research in an area to be able to contribute something to an otherwise unconclusive.
If there's a thread where two or three pros have already given "the" answers, I see little benefit in saying "yeah! what he said!".
Likewise, if I see a full page and a half of complete morons being unarguably wrong about just about everything, I can't be bothered to even start with the thread and tend to bypass them.
(I'll also add that this has, if memory serves, never been the case on RDO - but that logic can be extended to certain other pillars of reefing wisdom online)
