has anyone tried using a small dorm fridge and drilling the side out and running tube in a coil fashion through the fridge. and a pump to run tank water through it. thought it was cool cause you could regulate temp by turning the dial to cold or colder.

This topic comes up a lot here and on other boards. From what I've read, it cannot be done. The dorm frodge doesn't have enough cooling power to do it. The compressor would be running constantly and burn out.

What JH already stated. The little fridge does not have enough cooling power.

yeah, regular fridge wouldn't be able to keep up. It's like in most freezers, they have a limit as to how much food you can put in them each week, or else they burn out.

FWIU, they aren't designed for the continuous use that aquarium cooling needs.

He may not have much heat input to his tank. Put the fridge to better use and fill it with beer.

I think stocking it with beer would help because it would give a constant mass to chill and develop thermal inertia.

Use copper pipe with a drip leg for condensate? The air has a way lower heat capicity that the water and there is huge contact time in the skimmer?

Course...this would be next to impossible to automate.
