I've always wondered about the garlic method. I currently have a Powder Blue Tang with ich. I got him a week ago. He was eating at the store, was nice and fat, had nice dark colors, and wasn't diseased (he was ich free when I bought him). I brought him home and he's not eating what I offer except for nori which I put in like every 3 days and he picks at the rocks all day. After 4 or 5 days, he developed the annoying disease. I have a cleaner shrimp and the tang goes to him but the shrimp can only take off so much. If I tried the garlic method, what do I do? I never really understood it. Excuse my stupidity here but do you just take a piece of garlic and feed it to the fish? Do you rub some garlic on the food their eating? Is it the real garlic we're talking about or is it the spice? As you can see, I clearly know nothing of this method. Please help. I've been caring for saltwater fish for a few years now and this is my first ich case.

Sorry for stealing the spotlight like this, stonepilot.

It's always worked for me, but garlic might not be as effective on a PBT.

Here's an article on the whole garlic effect on ich:

Most don't buy it, but it's worked nicely for me. Just work on keeping your tank conditions optimal so that the fishes immune system can fight it off. Soaking your nori with garlic xtreme or selcon might help.

What always has worked for me was to up my temp. to 82degrees and keep my salinity around 20. I keep the temp at 82 for about two weeks and when the ich seems to be gone i only lower and keep it at 79degrees. Less stress on the fish with lower salinity and higher temp. plus I think the higher temp gets the ich to cycle a little faster. I just installed a UV sterilizer as well and I think after about a month now it is really improving my tank health. I have also noticed that stress always brings ich back, so really take a good look at your tank and see what might be stressing the fish out.

Granted my experience is with freshwater, I had a bad case of ich a couple months ago and what finaly worked was coppersafe. I do not know if it is safe for salt water....

My temp. is already around 82 and i can't lower the salinity level because I've got a reef. I'll dip some nori in selcon or garlic xtreme some time this week. Just need to find the time to go out and buy some (I'm a high school student and I'm sick so it could take another two days or so).

Kick ich. Great product.

It is probably to late to just treat a single fish. Ich has a larvae stage that occurs quickly, and the cycle can last around 21 days.

Kick ich will treat the tank, without hurting any reef inhabitants including corals. I used it twice in my career, and LFS uses it all of the time for tangs and other susceptible fishes.

Hypo salinity and tem changes are not a good method in a reef tank. Especially any containing any kind of starfish and anemones as these do not tolerate swings in salinity or temps very well, as well as many delicate coral.
