WOW!!!

I've just returned to the UK having been to THE GEORGIA AQUARIUM - The Worlds Largest Aquarium!! It's out of this world! You chaps in the US are so very lucky to have such an amazing place which you must try and visit if you've not yet been.

I'm very fortunate in that my job takes me to Atlanta and the US on a regular basis and I have been lucky enough to visit the aquarium on three occasions now. After each visit I've been left with a feeling of awe at the sheer scale of this place. Particularly in relation to the six and a half million gallon exhibit called 'Ocean Voyager', housing the two enormous Whale Sharks - The Largest Fish in the World. There are over 100.000 other fish in this exhibit alone, including many different types of shark, HUGE shoals of different types of stingrays, Giant ( and I mean GIANT ) Groupers and tens of thousands of beautiful Golden Trevally Fish - to name but a few. There is a 100 ft long underwater tunnel which curves through the centre of this massive sea which is wide enough to include a moving walkway or, ( unlike other aquarium tunnels I've been through ) it provides plenty of space to walk and stop and just gawp at what suddenly appears from the dark and swims over head. The viewing window the second largest in the world smaller by just 2 inches and measures 23 ft tall by 61 ft wide, is 2 ft thick and weighs 185 tons. This overwhelming view awaits just a short flight of steps after exiting the tunnel. Hours could be spent sat in this darkened theatre style room never getting bored. Truly moving and unlike anything else I've seen before!!!!

This is just one of the exhibits at the Aquarium but there is so much more, including a jaw dropping Reef set-up who's viewing window curls over your head alowing you to watch as huge waves roll over-head crashing onto the reef.

After my first visit, I posted a thread about my experience along with lots of photos of the many different and unusual exhibits there. If you would like to see it you can find it here;

On this latest visit, I took several short video clips which I've put together as a short film. I'm no film maker and the clips are taken on my still camera, but it's really worth having a look as it gives you a much better feel of just how BIG this place and it's fish really are. It shouldn't take too long to download ( about 2 mins on my comp ) but I promise it's worth it. Oh and if you have speakers on your computer, turn them up as there's some cool music too. Hope you've found this interesting. Here's some pics taken last week

The oily skin of the sharks leave smears on the inside of the acrilic when they swim up against it. It's the job of these divers to clean - buff the glass. It will take these guys 6 days to complete the job!

Whales are indeed Mammals!
However, Whale Sharks are a species of Shark and therefore are fish.
The largest fish of all.

If you get the opportunity I highly recommend the behind the scenes tour. I did it with our local aquarium society and it was truly amazing.

I would guess those are just coveralls. Most working air divers wear either jeans and a long sleave shirt or coveralls when diving. Saturation divers wear suits that have hot water pumped in to them to keep them warm at depth. If it was cold enough for a dry suit I bet they would be wearing gloves also.

Hey man I have several bosses there. Bernie Marcus, Jeff Swannigan, Bruce Carlson, Joe Poniatowski the list goes on and on and on. I'm just an average fish in an 8 million gallon pond. But a happy fish at that :wink:

They're not Manta rays they're Cownose rays. Mantas are perhaps a thing to consider but since we have two Giant Hammerheads in this tank rays in general tend to take a bit of a walloping with them as tankmates. So I don't think they'll be adding any mantas anytime soon especially until we can get the big female on target again.

it might be crowded as hell.. but OMG it is breathtaking. I've been to baltimore, chatanooga, san diego, and a couple other large ones, none of them compare to the spacious and diverse layout.
My wife and i are planning on renewing our vows in the ball room next year. Worth every penny.

Yep it's quite a place :) We are very lucky here.

I've been through 3 times now, including a behind-the-scenes tour conducted by Jeff Swanagan himself. It's truly an impressive facility!

The pictures say it all - it's a MUST SEE here in the ATL!
