Hello all,

I'm collecting a little more informal research; I'm interested in learning about the online community for the aquarium hobby.

How many aquarium discussion forums do you participate in at least once a month? (Please do not count websites that you visit only to buy things, I'm interested in participation of reading and/or responding to discussion threads).

Feel free to list the top three websites you visit and why. If a website has not been listed yet in the replies, please include a URL I can follow to the site.

If you see this poll on another reef website, please do not answer again.

Thanks,

Brian

I 'visit' a lot each month to keep up on what's going on on other forums/sites and to post AAOLM announcements. However, this is the only one I really 'participate' in. Before I became an admin here 3 yrs ago I probably 'participated' in at most 2 regularly.

I marked down '1' for my vote.

I voted "three."

reefs.org (been here over 5 years now)
reefcentral.com (mainly the LPS forum, been there nearly 5 years)
zoosrus.com (fantastic bunch of people...mainly rare coral collectors...been there half a year)

Peace,

Yeah, what is it with chicks and seahorses?
I drop into RC sometimes, but I mostly stay here and seahorse.org, and check the seahorse forum at Wet Web Media from time to time.

I actively participate here.

I do visit zeovit.com fairly regularly, mainly because that are alot of Bubble King owners there. I don't use Zeovit.

I do visit RC occasionally and check their for sale forums regulary if I am on the market for something or want to sell something.

When I had a planted tank, I also visited the planted tank forum.

So for now, I would say 3. But my total posts on the other two is less than 200.

I'm on this one, you guys have helped me from the geck-ko (intentional  )

And I recently found out there's a board for my local area, South Jersey:

http://www.reefsanctuary.com/forums/sou ... reef-club/

I joined and posted a question about a display tank in a local Chinese restaurant that was a jewel in the late 80s, and is still there today, in deplorable condition.

They also have a website [www.sjmrc.com] and had their first meeting today . . . I missed it, had to go to a baby shower.

Hey Brian, why do you want to know?

I'm doing a little bit of research for an article I'm writing. Just trying to get a rough feel for how many discussion forums people visit and extrapolate a little on how fragmented the reefing community is.

Definitely not a hard core data collection, just a rough estimate.

Brian

PS. Sorry for the late response, did not get an email saying there were responses to this poll.

My $0.02 is that the community isn't 'fragmented' per-se. I think more of it is that when hobbyists first start out they do an internet search, find a couple bulletin boards, read them, start posting to a couple and then end up picking one that suits their personal taste. I think there's a couple 'big boards/sites' out there that people primarily frequent with a bunch of smaller ones at the fringes.

Is this an aquarium forum?

Yep. Aquarium forum, discussion forum, discussion board, bulletin board, they go by many names.

Brian

Shane,

Your comments are great :) They could be spot on, I'm just trying to put a little bit of numbers around that thought. I've already learned some very interesting things from this exercise.
