Jordan, it looks like a scrolling algae to me (Padina sp.) These are really cool algae that forms a lot of whirling scrolls .... very attractive!

I wish I could share pics 'cause I've got a dark yellow one in my 12g nanocube that I have to keep trimming back every month or so because it grows out so long it looks like a big fuzzy monti cap.

Don't know if it puts out anything noxious/irritating at all, but snails don't seem to want to travel across it. <shrug>
