I'm considering either an Iwaki, Blueline, or Pan World pump as my return pump from my sump, but I have a few questions I think that my fellow reefkeepers could help me answer.

  • 1) Somewhere along the line, I heard that some of the Iwaki pumps don't have cooling fans and thus make less noise than the others. If I remember right, it was the 20RLT, 20RLXT, 30RLT, 30RLXT, and maybe the 40RLT and 40RLXT. Can anyone confirm this for me?

    2) Anyone that's acutually heard both an American Iwaki and Japanese Iwaki, can you confirm that one is quieter than the other and if so which one is quieter? Please only answer this question if you've actually have heard both and your not going by what everyone else says.

    3) I've heard that the Blueline and Pan World pumps are the same. Can anyone confirm this for me? And if so, which Blueline pump matches up with which Pan World pump?

    4) This goes back to the first question regarding which Iwaki pumps have fans. If the same guy that engineered the Iwaki pumps engineered the other two pumps, did he leave out the cooling fans out of the smaller Bluelines and Pan Worlds also? And if so which ones did he leave them out of?

    5) This question is only for those experienced in two or more of the pumps mentioned. Which of the pumps have you tried and which did you personally like better? Let me know what made one pump better than the other in your pesonal opinion.
All your answers are greatly appreciated, and help me chose the correct pump for my system. Thanks for your help.

I'll get you started.

1. Some of the smaller ones do not have cooling fans. I know the blueline/pan world 40HD does have a cooling fan. I do not know the cross over point.

2. Their are us and Jap models I do not have experience with either

3. Blueline and pan world are the same pumps. Model numbers are the same as far as I know.

4. As far as I know the smaller blue lines are like the smaller Iwaki

5. Have only used the Blueline 40HD.

After going to a few vendor websites, I figured out that the two pumps were the same:
This how the Pan World and Blueline Pumps match up.
  • Pan World 40PX .... = Blueline HD20

    Pan World 50PX .... = Blueline HD30

    Pan World 50PX-X . = Blueline HDX30

    Pan World 100PX .. = Blueline HD40

    Pan World 100PX-X = Blueline HDX40

    Pan World 150PS .. = Blueline HD55

    Pan World 200PS .. = Blueline HD70

    Pan World 250PS .. = Blueline HD100
