Protein Skimmer Sump --> Hangon

Question: Is there a way to make a sump protein skimmer (ie. AquaC EV120, Euroreef) into a Hangon/external protein skimmer?

Reason: For the next year I have a 55 gallon tank with no sump and a $*@Y# prizim protein skimmer and I am looking to get a better one, but there is not sense buying an external/hangon bc in a year we plan on getting a 220gal tank and making a sump. So we want to make 1 SMART GOOD purchase that we can use for now and then. Is that even possible?

How clever are you? What model ER are you considering? Is it a simgle pump type or multiple pump? Here is my idea. You will need to put a shelf in the tank to supprt the pump. Also you will need a shelf outside the tank to support the skimmer. Do a gate valve mod and pipe it back to the tank.

Clever - well me and my husband are both engineers (he is a mech one) so if the helps. ehehe He actually just emailed me and said something similar that would would have to make a stand outside the tank for the skimmer to sit higher than the tank. Hmmm = that does not look so eye appealing.

I guess we will hav to look into making a sump i guess ..just not sure if there is room... :/

CC, I think that would be your best bet. You could just use a 5g bucket under/beside the tank to place your skimmer. Just make sure you get one (skimmer) big enough to handle the bigger tank.

If you are going to be adding a sump and an overflow you may be better off just getting a better HOB skimmer for the time being. Look around and you may find a good used one.
