I have not had a case of this crap for over 25 years but contribute that to keeping very hardy species. I want to do Tangs real bad but am afraid. What tangs are the hardiest and have the least chance of gettin salt water ich? What would you suggest. I like the Regal and Yellow the best. I have an established 50 gallon with no fish in it at this time. Help?

Yah, they need more room to swim around. But you can keep any type of fish without ich. Just use the proper qt methods and you'll be fine in that regard.

A 50g isn't big enough....it will probably just get you the ick you fear. IMO.

So, the size of the tank is a contributer of ich? As in cryptocarion?

I sadly have had a ton of firsthand experience with ich. IME QT will help a little but not a ton. Many will dispute this, maybe I'm wrong, but w/e. It's really easy to avert if you do a nice slow acclimation and don't have sudden changes in water parameters, example make sure the new water you add is the same temp as the aquarium water. Fish are mostly susceptible when they are stressed, so the first 2-3 weeks are critical. Otherwise you'll be fine, just be careful and you'll have no problems. Tangs of the genus Zebrasoma, like purples and yellows, are hardier than Acanthurus (sp?).

wings, I think what Emily means is that the small tank will stress them out making them more susceptible to ich.

Smaller tanks also have less water and so the water they do have changes temp alot more quickly than a larger aquarium.

One of the LAST fish you should be considering if you're concerned about ich is the regal tang for starters.
Secondly, don't introduce the parasite to your system, and there is no need to be paranoid. Quarantine Grandma! Quarantine like the wind!!!!!

Crypto has nothing to do with temperature. Its got everything to do what JimM says.
