i am getting the equipment together for my new setup and the one thing i'm still dithering over is the skimmer.

I've seen Euroreef skimmers in action and the tanks connected too them look awesome, but with ASM and the PM Bullet a couple others that i forget right now, are they worth the almost $800 i would have to lay-out for my proposed system.

I guess what i'm after is a little hand holding if truth be told, i'm spending to long sitting thinking about it, $800 for a small amount of acrylic and 2 pumps or pay an extra $100 and get a ride on for the larger garden i've got after moving house.

Can anyone give me a comparison between a Euro & an ASM skimmer

Or should i just stop my b***hing and buy the bloody thing

Anton, I would get the ASM if you want the best value. It really performs nearly as well as the Euroreef, only it's not as nicely built. I've owned both.

I am really happy with my ER. I have not tried the ASM to compare, but I hear they are just as nice.

I just bought a ER and I can't believe how much crap it pulls out of my tank. I literally empty the cup once a week. I wouldn't take for it!

ASM are ER clones at half the price... I heard that are not as well built, but if you don't plan to play soccer with them... what the heck, why?

just completed my first full month with my ASM. Very nice. It doesn't pull out as much crap as my 6' DIY skimmer did (nearly .75 gallons of dark crap each week) but it is sooooo much easier to set up and maintain. As far as being well-built . . . I don't see anyway that you are going to damage one doing anything even remotely "normal" with it. The biggest difference I saw is just the clarity of the plastic which has little to do with performance.

Are all Euroreefs sump mounted? Do they make external skimmers?

My neighbor just ordered a G4-X with Sendra 9000 pump for his 240g. Looking forward to seeing it in action. If it does well, I think I'll get an ASM as well. People tell me the larger ASM's will do a better job than my 40 inch dual beckett. I'd love to get rid of the Iwaki MD70RLT powering it. 70w Sendra instead of a 3.5 amp pressure pump would make a nice dent in the electric bill.

I think all of them are either in-sump or hang-on (these are smaller). I'm sure you could mod them to work externally. . . if you visit the ASM site (http://www.asmskimmer.com) you can see the mod kits they sell for the ASM skimmers to be mounted externally. I'm sure if you can do it to an ASM you can do it to a EUROREEF.

Yes they do check the recirculating skimmers.

I have a TF-110A (extinct manufacturer), that is only a mediocre skimmer, but I still get one cup (as in measuring cup) of dark nasty smelling skimmmate per day.

I have some friends that have ASMs that are much better than my skimmer, I don't see why you would need to spend $800 on a ER. Save the money and get the ASM and then use the following thread to tune it:

I've been running an ASM for over a year on my 180g. Pulls a cup of black like coffee skimmate every couple days. For $200 more I could have bought a ER that would do the same. Why pay that much more?

Why do some people continue to put premium gaoline into a car that is designed to run just fine on regular?

I bought ER cuz i work at the fish store in the weekend. The owner hook me up. If you can get premium gas with a price of regular. Why not?
