How do you set a large tank (300G) on a piece of styrofoam without tearing the styrofoam completely up?

I picked up a 4x8 sheet of 3/4" styrofoam at HD yesterday and it it really flimsy.

I think with all of the jostling of trying to get the tank set square on the stand that the styrofoam will get torn all up.

The tank weighs about 550 pounds.

Any tips or suggestions are appreciated.

fwiw, on my 125 gallon, the styro did not get very torn up when we moved the tank around on, but we got lucky on the first attempt and it was very close to perfect on the stryo. the tank actually glided pretty well on the styro.

a guy in my club used a engine hoist to put his 500 gallon perfect on his tank. but not everyone has a engine hoist or can fit one in the fish room :) some guys also put a smooth thin sheet of wood between their tank and the styro.

The styrofoam survived intact when my 260g was installed. If you're carefull with placement, there shouldn't be any issues. If you're not carefull, the styrofoam will be the least of your problems!

Consider the PSI rating of the styrofoam, it is a piece of cake. You can stand on top of a styrofoam without problem, but if your shoes has pins and nails, that you can torn it up. The difference is PSI, not weight.

There is a trick to not tearing up the styrofoam and I saw it being used by Jeff Turner. Jeff is one of the premier custom tank builders in the US. Jeff sprays the surface of the styrofoam with silicone. The silicone allows the tank to slide without tearing.

I found the tank slides pretty easy on styrofoam by itself. I couldn't budge my 180 by myself (450 pounds) but once it was on styrofoam I could slide it around without much grunting.

Well, I guess it's not as hard as I envisioned. We'll just have to "git-r-done".

Thanks for the replies!

Yeah, he is one funny SOB. Saw him live here in Fort Myers about 6 months ago. He only did new material.

I could use about 8 guys his size to help unload and set my tank this Saturday. lol

Well, my 7 buddies were all stunned that we were able to set the tank and jostle it into place without damaging the styrofoam. Every man agreed that there was zero chance of the styrofoam would survive. I put a strip of duct tape across the front edge and overlapped it onto the top for the whole length of the front of the tank. Worked like a charm.

The tank is dead nuts level too. :D
