Roger from Tunze completely misled me about the Tunze 6000 w/multicontroller for my 100 gal (5ft. long tank). After putting the pump in my tank, I noticed that some of my LPS, and softies were not taking well to the additional flow.

I am unaware of the reefs.org policies, so if I am in violation of any, please let me know, and I will remove any material you feel does not fit this forums guidelines. The point of my post is simply to inform people who are contemplating buying a Tunze pump for their setup to do research on their own, and NOT to trust Roger of Tunze. No matter how I tried setting up the pump, and turning down the knobs it was like sticking a fire hose in the tank.

In the following thread:

2 6000's would be right. Eventually the surface sand will get compacted and laden with bio film and not move so easily but at first you may have some issues with the sand bed. The 6000's are preferred because you can slow them down if needed and the 6060 cannot be used on a wavemaker so you will have a static flow.

I am running one in my 75 with a wavebox, no problems. I think 1 is sufficient. 2 could be used if you alternated them. Jon, I don't know how you are running that pump but 1 6000 is in no way too much for a 100 gallon tank.[/QUOTE]

Having said the above it seems a hair contradictory that Roger said the following in this thread:

This is going to be tricky- the tank is just so shallow that the jet from the Streams is going to strongly agitate the sand. I would suggest finding another system be it closed loop, Seaswirls or 7400/2 pumps.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have yet to find a solution to putting this pump to use in some alternative manner. I am unclear as to how to put it to use with a spraybar, and I am not sure if there is any other way to reduce flow by overriding the multicontroller directly from the box.

The stream from the Tunze literally goes from one side of the tank, and bounces off the opposite wall of the tank giving a temendous back draft of constant current. After trying to position the pump in just about every possible location, having the settings on the remote controller all the way knobbed to 0, and moving my corals that were not doing well to the most shaded areas from flow possible.... I am confident that I was truly mislead in purchasing this unit for my setup.

I made a point to mention that the other flow in the tank that would be present in addition to the Tunze are:

-Iwaki 30RLT (510gph - handles headpressure - one return location as the return pump)
-Iwaki 30RLXT (960gph - two return locations n a closed loop)
-Maxijet 1200 breaking surface tension

However, it seems the above have had little impact, seeing that when the Tunze turns on all of the flow is overtaken in the tunzes continuous unidirectional path.

I am convinced that I would have been better off with another Maxi jet 1200 and a wavemaker for some variable flow. This is truly disappointing.

So you can't dial down the flow rate with the controller on the 6000? I've seen Streams used in 4 and 6' setups without issue.

I had the tunze 6100 on my 150, it too seemed to be a little much for my softies as I couldnt get it positioned right. I sold it, and in hind sight wish I kept it and got the magnet holder for it. Why not place it low to the bottom with a magnet and let it blow behind your rock work. This will keep detritus from settling where you can't get to it and prevent dead spots between the rocks.

There's a big difference between the 6000 and the 6100 though, right? I can't imagine the 6000 being too much for a 5' tank on the lowest setting...

Playdope,
You have peaked my curiosity here as you say "After posting several times in this forum, and asking if the Tunze 6000 w/multicontroller would be too much flow for my 100 gal (5ft. long tank), I was assured it would not be too much. After putting the pump in my tank, I noticed that some of my LPS, and softies were not taking well to the additional flow".

By "this forum" do you mean "this one" literally? or do you mean reefcentral.com where you posted the same thing? Just curious. I'm funny that way.

Having said that, I am very curious as to who here, in this forum, "truly mislead" you. The US Distributor for this product is over at reefcentral.com. His name is Roger, and I seriously doubt he mislead you.

Alternatively, you might consider, and accept, that you are just a dumbass. I've already done that on your behalf.

Oh, sorry Len, since Playdope made the post at the other community I assumed he was familiar with it. My bad.

Funny you mention that Ben... I actually have the pump there now, and its producing the exact same wall bouncing effect. <sigh>

Shut your mouth bwanders. You are out of line.

Yes, I posted the message on reefcentral, and I completely forgot to remove that portion of the post which does NOT apply to anyone on reefs.org.

I was COMPLETELY misled by Roger of Tunze, and not by anyone on reefs.org. So before making such harsh statements, why don't you use a little common sense.

It seems you have only made 3 posts here... I can only guess you are primarily on reefcentral, and you just came over here to respond about this tunze issue.

I turned the knobs down all the way to the lowest setting on the small hand contoller. As for manually turning down something on the blue controller box... I'm not sure about that.

Len, I modified my original post here to avoid any confusion, and I won't be responding to any negative comments bwanders makes from here on out.

I'd only like to help others avoid running into the same situation, and I am trying to find where you guys recommend going from here. The tunze is too much, but I think I remember hearing something about a spraybar that could be encorporated into a tunze somehow. I'm also curious to know if any of you know a way to power back the pump from the blue box (not the black contoller with the knobs).

There is a small hole with a flathead screw on the blue box - thought that controlled master power from the transformer puck to the powerhead?

On my pump (6000s with upgraded xformers - same boxes) it has a a little + and - symbol and reads max power. I have dealt with Roger for a few years now and seriously doubt he was trying to steer you wrong PD. Give him a chance I'm sure he can find something that works for your scenario.

I see that small hole with the screw that can be turned on the blue box. But if I recall, the instruction manual said to turn it to 100% when first powering the setup on. Now that it has been running, is it okay for the screw to be turned back? Thanks.
