ok im looking to get a new submersible pump for a 37 gallon FOWLR tank that i will be setting up in a month or so...my question is what is a good, relatively cheap, submersible pump? I want atleast 450gph or more an hour....so far im looking at:

Viaaqua 1800 or 2300 - 480gph-600gph

Rio 2100 - 692gph

or the more expensive (and probably best one here) Quiet one 3000 - 780

leaning towards the viaaqua so far since its cheap and seems pretty quiet and effective....but cant find any reviews on it...any advice?[/img]

Anything but Rio. :D

I really like Eheims myself. They're quiet, relatively cool, powerful, and are reliable.

I've used 2 "Quiet One" pumps at home and another larger one at work - if you check their web site they consider "quiet" as under 40 decibels. I don't know how loud that is, but according to city codes a grocery store can be fined if their machinery out back is louder than that.

I second Len on the no-Rio, though so many people have used them without incident. Never tried or heard anything about the Via Aqua pumps.

I agree with Len - Eheims seem to be the best. Mags are cheap and fairly reliable though. IMO Sedra, Sen, Ocean Runner and Dolphin are other good choices. Out of that line-up IME Ocean Runners & Eheims are the quietest. Personally I would go with any of the above over your initial choices (JMO).

I like my Quiet One pumps. They are more quiet than my Mag pump but do heat up my tank some. I have a Rio I use occasionally and it runs fine. They are notorious for burning out and causing problems in tanks when they do so I don't use it much.

Quiet ones are just as bad as rios. Stay away! There is a guy on ebay that sells new mag-drives for very cheap, called magdrive outlet. They are all returns but I got mine and it was in perfect condition for nearly half price. I would get a mag 7. Ehiems are nice but expensive.

The only experience I've had the new style Quiet Ones was a pump that died after about a month or two. Probably just a lemon, but I didn't find the pump to be very quiet either...

I have only used mags and rios. I would not use another rio if someone gave me one. I had three die in three years. My mags wre still going strong after three years.

I have never had a Rio die on me, but all of the larger models I have leak a little bit of electricity into the water. We only use them for mixing up saltwater now if at all.

I had a Mag-12 that ran great for over 6 years, then I went on vacation for a week, came back and half my tank was dead. The only thing I could find wrong was my Mag-12 was all rusted to crap.
