It's for my 55g tank.

Super Skimmer-Needle Wheel-Up to 65 gal

Reasons for buying it?
1. Current one blows (no pun intended, because it really doesn't work that well)

2. The dimensions had a small foot print. The biggest problem is that I wanted an IN-SUMP design, and anyone who has a 55g understands the real estate issue underneath the sump.

3. I particularly wanted an in-sump model. I had a prism and one of the gaskets leaked, almost causing a stand collapse disaster. (The old stand, was made out of particle board and when it got wet, all the joints loosened up and got flimsy. 8O I now have a solid pine stand). All this happened while we were on vacation. If we chose to stay on another week, would would have had a serious mess on our hands when we came home.

4. This was recommended to me by a friend who services tanks for a living, AND, I did NOT purchase it from him, so he had ZERO financial gain in telling me what was the best skimmer.

When it arrives, I will let you know how it works.

Anybody else out there have one of these?

Is this a ER knockoff? I have a ES5-2 for my 60 and it fits fine in my 10g sump.

'Don't think so. What's the footprint of your es5-2? The dimensions of this one is: 4.25" x 5.5" x 20.75" which is going to fit perfectly.

There was a thread on RC about that skimmer or the larger version of it. The junk it pulls out is pretty impressive and it looks like it blows away the remora/urchin.

I've got the smaller version of that one! Thanks for the link. I'll post pics of it in action when I finally hook it up.

Hmm the RC link mentions it having a silencer? I'd be interested in how that works.

Also never actually had an insump skimmer that was powered by a powerhead/water pump, so I'm curious do you need baffles to keep it at a constant water level?

Don't really read long thread, but typically a skimmer silencer is just a plastic dongle attach to the air input that muffles the noise as air is sucked in to the skimmer via the venturi. You can make it using coarse air stone, for example.

This model has an adjustment on the top that regulates the water level.

For what it's worth too... if you have a skimmer that uses the basic air tube, lengthen the air tube like 4-5 feet, and the noise dies significantly. I had a prizm.. and the air tube was 6 inches long. I scotch-taped the additional length and never had a problem with noise after that.

This baby is going to be a winner. I got it up and running by 9PM last night, this morning, I had wet foam already. The micro bubbles are way smaller than my other skimmer, so I'm really happy about it.

For those of you who need a smaller skimmer, yes, it's 4X5" but what they don't tell you is that you'll need room for not only the pump, but the injector, as well as the screening. So that takes up an addition 3-4 inches. The nice thing about that though is you can move that around a bit, so even though I didn't have a foot print of 7X9", I was able to move it into an area not used. Yes, it's now tight in the sump, but definitely manageable.

I like it so far. :D

Ok. Here's a shot of it working after 22 hours. I think eventually I can tame this down a bit, but as long as it's taking sludge out of the tank, I'm happy. From the history of others who have this skimmer, I think it should even get better than this! I'll try to keep you guys informed.

Here's the skimmer after 48 hours. Not too different, but still foaming nicely.
