Was wondering if anyone knows what type of anemone this is:

Is this one of the bad guys?

looks like Majano Anenomes- slower spreading as compared to Aiptasia, but many consider them a pest- always had to use Kalk slurries to get rid of them, as I never found anything that ate the little buggers....and I notice theres a couple Aiptasia Anenomes in that picture as well.

I have heard of tulip anemones, and even seen them, but I cannot distinguish them from mojanos, sorry.

My mojanos don't have pink tips like that though, I don't know if that makes a difference or not.

I think the bottom line is, are they dividing several times a week? Then they are a problem.

Tulip and Majano are names for the same thing IME(I'm sure they're slightly different in the scientific sense but for what you're asking they're not really).
Yes they will sting your corals. As I said- they're a slow grower as compared to Aiptasia, but I've found them to be a bother anyway- none of the critters that potentially eat Aiptasia(Peppermint shrimp, CBBs, Berghia Nudis, etc) will the Majanos IME, the only successful means of eradication, was a syringe full of a Kalkwasser slurry.

I honestly don't know if those are bad guys or not. I would keep them somewhere that you could easily get them under control if need be. Like on a rock sitting in the middle of sand.

I would bet that they do sting some corals, having tenticles to catch food and all.

If you ever find yourself thinking they are getting out of hand, take action immediately. When I got mojano anemones, I had never heard of any pest anemones other than aptaisia, and I thought they were cute hitchhikers so I fed them. 8O

It took about a month before I realized what I had done but it was far too late. That was over 6 years ago, and to this day I still battle them.

I had a majano problem a while back - my CBB thought they were quite tasty. Some pygmy and full size angels will eat them too.

Maybe buhda is right, maybe they are the same thing. I don't want to come off like a small anemone expert or anything.

I have never seen them side by side in the same tank conditions, I just know I got a lecture from someone for calling her "tulip" anemones mojanos!

see, thats the problem- even with Aiptasia, not all the critters ALWAYS eat them- IME from my own tanks, and running "my" salt only LFS, it was always hit or miss with any of the reputed eaters of Aiptasia- more often than not, customers just ended up with another critter in their tank(which isnt actually a bad thing) and no answer to their pest problem. Emperor Angels supposedly love Majanos, but thats not what I would call reef safe or a very cheap way of eradicating them. The only sure fired, tried and true method I found, that had no effect on any other tank inhabitant(provided it didnt get on them as well) is/was a Kalk slurry/paste laid directly on the anemone- they simply disolve away.

Laura- you can tell your "friend" that according to Bob Fenner, they're one and the same.

Whos Bob Fenner and can you link it?
one of the guys that runs wetwebmedia.com, and he wrote The Conscientious Marine Aquarist - a must read for all new reefers IMHO.

I had one that I fed and it quickly turned into 2. I haven't fed them since and they haven't split since. I've had them for several months so far.
They are located close to a brain and I have always watched to see if they would irritate it, but not yet.
I kinda like them, so if they were to multiply, I would keep them in check with kalk paste.
I have my hands filled with the aiptasias anyway.

A local pet shop showed those to me a month or so ago. They took over his entire reef display and destroyed it !!!! For years he had a beautiful 200 gallon set up and now it is completely torn down. He let them grow not realizing how damaging they were. They started growing and he said it just took off like wildfire. I'm real glad I asked because I'd never purchase rock from this supplier. :(

LOL, well, this was several years ago, so perhaps she has learned that lesson by now! 8O
