Are there any downsides to using a poly filter pad in a reef tank(75gal., 100lbs of live rock, DSB, Remora skimmer and 25 gal. sump).
Thanks eddie

the only downside is that if you dont clean it often, like weekly. It will turn into a nitrate factory.

other than that, I think they work well for polishing. Like I said though, just make sure you clean it religiously.

I used them all the time when my tank was new and found them to be of great use with the cleaning of the sea water that I use, of heavy metals and such. They are now a bit hard to get here.Unfortunately.

How did a simple fiber pad do that?

Here's what a poly filter does:

The POLY-FILTER is for filtering and purifying both fresh and salt water aquariums. It is a formulation of a special patented material bonded to a synthetic matrix. By means of a unique proprietary process, the POLY-FILTER is made impervious to salt and is also organic loving to certain materials. It can absorb and adsorb contaminants and other toxic materials found in nature or added to fresh and salt water with or without fish and invertebrates. Medication added to fresh and salt water aquariums for treatment of diseased fish will automatically be removed by the POLY-FILTER after serving their intended purpose before the medication can produce a toxic effect on the fish.

The POLY-FILTER is non-toxic and harmless to biological filtration because it allows a sufficient amount of ammonia to reach the biological filter in order to sustain the bacteria culture. The POLY-FILTER provides a supplemental means for removal of ammonia when the biological filter is unable to break down the excess ammonia and its concentration increases rapidly. Then the POLY-FILTER adsorbs the excess ammonia while the biological filter re-adjusts to higher ammonia input levels.

BECAUSE OF THIS UNIQUE FILTERING CHARACTERISTIC, THE POLY-FILTER ELIMINATES THE NEED AND EXPENSE OF CARBON OR ION EXCHANGE RESINS AND PROTEIN SKIMMERS.

I have used them when I thought I needed to clean up the water in a new tank. They work very well. There not cheap though.

And God forbid if you ever have to use copper in a tank they will quickly remove it, and turn blue to show the amount they have removed. They are about the only resin filter I know that changes color to let you know when their useful life is over.

A poly filter large enough to handle your 180 would probably cost you $100 per month. 8O

They ain't exactly cheap.

I always thought a poly filter was one 'o them nylon filter pad thingers. I guess I was wrong.

They do look like a nylon filter pad, but through some chemical ho ha that I don't understand they are endowed with a magical ability to remove nasties from the water!!

I use them from time to time and have been satisfied with the results. I don't understand how they work though, which usually means I am reluctant to recommend something, but I have been pleased with their performance.

sounds to me like a refugium full of living macros will do the same thing much cheaper. and additionally remove carbon dioxide as well.
