HOT TIPS Column: March 2005 Issue of Advanced Aquarist

March's theme is "Getting Rid of Excess Frags." Please submit any tips you might have for people new at getting rid of their excess frags. Tips on how to work out deals with your LFS, coral frag trading groups, etc. Your tips and tricks will help new and existing reefkeepers and also helps to bring the hobby to the next level (plus it's just cool to get published in a magazine like Advanced Aquarist). :P

When published, your hot tip will have your username published (along with your real name if you so desire). Every month we will be running a new HOT TIP thread so stay tuned and help out when you can. :)

The staff at both Reefs.org and Advanced Aquarist would like to thank you for your continued interest and support of our online community, magazine, and services.

Let the submissions begin! :D

Best regards,

Reefs.org and Advanced Aquarist staff

Join or start a local reef club. You will be surprised at how many reefers live within driving distance.

Twice a year or so I would advertise on this board for free frags & no shipping. I get local hobbiest to come & take what I have & some of them that know my set-up would bring frags of corals I do not have myself. Great way to meet people close to my area that are serious hobbiest.

Here is my 180g system before I moved it and added a 320g system plus...

Thumbs up to Osama!!! One of the nicest guys i've met in this hobby. Very generous and loves to talk reefs. If you get the chance to see his set-ups, don't hesitate!!!

Should have some frags for you next time I see you Osama.

I take them to the LFS for store credit. He typically will take just about anything I bring in.

I can't remember the last time I had to use real money to buy anything at the LFS. I always have a nice store credit in my wallet :D

Me and MikeB were thinking of a "Frag'a'Mail Service". Person pays the shiping for the frag, kinda like a suprise frag. You just don't know what you might get. But within each family, so if you want a softy,LPS,SPS and so on you specify. Kinda like good will towards reefers type deal. Kinda hoakie but fun to me. I wouldn't mind recieving a mystery coral. Or maybe a round robin thing where we have one container and it goes to diffrent people and around the land it goes. We're not talking send a colony here. Just a frag.

I would love some new frags. I Have just started my reef. I have a thriving pulsing xenia, a rock full of zooanthids, and some pretty cool looking shrooms., but I really need some more to give my rock some more color. My wife is already pretty pissed about the intial setup cost. She keeps telling me we could have gone to the Carribean for what I paid to set up my 60 gallon. I'll pay for the shipping. :P

Local reef club fragswap. As a matter of fact, I'm off to one today!

I'll take in a bunch of mushrooms, calustrea, kenya tree frags, and get some cool stuff!

I also give frags away to people who need them after a tank crash, or they're getting back into the hobby. (Whether actually setting up a new tank, or just a-refound interest in the tank they have.)

Reeferman, I hear that from my husband's best friend all the time.

I take them to the LFS and trade them in for store credit, but that usually means I end up trading them for more corals.

Honestly I would love some frags. Seeing as I just reset up my tank like 9 months ago and the only thing I have put in it since then was a $20 neon goby from Petco. Argh!!! I dunno of any local reef clubs around here. Irvine is so expensive!
