Pro- Will prevent anemones or other soft stupid invertibrates from becoming a slurry by getting sucked into a powerhead (those little strainers they come with are not enough safety for anemones). It also does a little to help keep the impeller clean I suppose.
Con- You have to take the sponge off at least once a week and clean it as it will get clogged.
I do not use sponges on powerheads unless I need to keep an anemone safe, too much trouble to keep clean.
I use foam on only one of my two powerheads, seems to be enough for my 29gal - keeps the water pretty polished. I also have a HOB filter w/phosphate remover and carbon.
IME though, try to cover the foam with plastic wrap or a zip-lock bag before prying it off, to prevent all the debris from going back into the water when it's time for cleaning. (The MJ will spurt out some bubbles (cavitate) from time to time, if ever it becomes too clogged.)

HAHAHAHAHHAH! YES I hear that! I bought a beautiful $50 LT anemone and you can guess what happened to that "soft stupid invertibrate." Yes it got sucked into one of my powerheads the next day...
