Ok, I finally did it and purchased a HOB refugium. Now, I have it installed at this very moment with Miracle Mud in and settling. Where do I go from here? First ?, do I have to leave the light on 24/7 with any type of macro algae I place in there? Also if i ever wanted to place some Chemipure in my tank, could i use the CPR refuge to do so, and in which compartment, first or last? Any other tips you guys might have would be much appreciated!

Chaetomorphia (sp.) is a good choice for a refugium macro. Get it thriving and in sufficient quantity, it will trump anything else you are doing. JMHO.

Yeah i am probably going to get some chaeto. if i can find any. Does the chaeto require 24/7 lighting?

No algae requires 24/7 lighting, but you can usually do that if you want.

I prefer reverse lighting, it tends to lessen pH swings. But if your fuge is on the back of the tank I wonder if the light at night might disturb your fish.

What you could do is have your refugium light on a timer so it comes on an hour or two before your main tank lights, kind of a "slow dawn" effect.

Nothing in our tanks require 24/7 lighting. That said, I have 24/7 lighting on my external sump/refug but only 12-13 hour lighting on my in tank refug. Chaeto grows faster in the in tank because the lighting is higher. But still does well in the external refug.

Do tangs or angels enjoy eating Chaeto. algae?

definately. My yellow tang is constantly pokeing his nose through my egg crate and "slurping" chaeto from my in tank refug.

My sailfin and foxface really like the chaeto, not so much the hippo tang.

My yellow tang does not touch either cheato or Ulva. Do not keep your lights 24/7 - you'll mess up the other fuge inhabitants (pods, stars, etc).

I am putting it on a oppisit lighting time, I plan on putting the fuge behind the display tank (might light the sump at that time too just to see if that helps out) and painting three sides of it so the light will not disturbe the display tank I have yet to figure out what I am going to grow in there, right now live sand and resech for the rest.

I got a 2 quart bag on ebay for 9.95!!

It came looking sweet I put it in my Fuge and this morning all sorts of little creatures are coming out. As far as dollar for dollar that is the best money I have spent on my aquarium so far IMO.

As for feeding our macros to our tanks I try to do this on a very limited basis. The reason to grow macros is to export nutrients.

actually just a nit here.

Nutrients never have to be exported. As long as nitrogen compounds, phosphates, and carbon dioxide are converted into such things as carbs to fuel plant growth then those nutirents never have to leave the system. Just as long as ammonia, nitrites nitrates are 0.0 things are fine.

But toxins and heavy metals like copper do have to be exported and therefore periodic removal of macros does help that.

Sorry to come in like this. I was just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on what type of substrate to use in the fuge. I am also setting up a refug/sump so this thread was super good reading. Thank you

fell free to jump in anytime. And glad you found this thread informative.

Actually it depends on the plant life you want to use. I have sand in my external fuge because I originally used macros that had hold downs. but my in tank fuge is vertical and the macros just grow between the partition and the glass. algae turf scrubbers grow the algae in screens and therefore do not require a substrait. And chaeto (brillo pad) doesn't need a substrait either.

If you are cultivating pods, they may need sand so that is a consideration also.
