I forgot the suitable food size for maxima clam.I think it's in the 15micron range. To target feed the clam, the easy part is to use turkey baster to blow food on the upper current. The hard part is to find the suitable food that is in the right size range.

I really didn't like the recommended method of putting the baby clams in a bowl of tank water, add phyto, and wait until the green water turns clear. It just seemed like it would put to much stress on a baby maxima.

What I used to do was cut a 16oz Aquafina bottle in half, place it over the baby clam, and squirt some of Reed's Coral & Clam diet into the neck of the bottle. Couple of minutes, once a week should do it.

You may have to squeeze the contents of the tube out very gently as the onset of a strong flow may spook the clam and cause it to "clam up", so to speak.

8O Source for this info? I have never heard that and have sucessfully target fed other things with a syringe. I was thinking of adding a clam to my set up in a few months and wouldn't want to damage it.

Where is the source of this info? If you stick the syringe in it directly I imagine this may be possible..but isnt this how you "target" feed?? Or one method of target feeding?? no different than a turkey baster..IMO taking the clam in out of the tank into a seperate bowl might put undue stress on the clam...

I'd like to know this, too. I've always target fed reef inhabitants without a problem. I love Reefnutz' idea with the bottle, tho. I already have one that I use as a fishtrap, might as well add another to my collection of plastic devices

by target feeding I didn't mean sticking anything into the intake of the clam.. I had somthing less invasive in mind.. like the bottle idea. Personally, I would never squirt stuff directly INTO the clam.. sounds like a good way to harm somthing to me.

I DID, however, try the bottle top, and it seems to work great. While it was on I also noticed lots of pods coming out of the sand under the top to take advantage of the buffet!

You dont use the syringe to directly inject..Gently "spray" around, this way you hit your target much easier than just putting the food in the water column..

FWIW, I just place the small clam in my tank and don't worry about it. I do feed phyto every few days. They live and grow just fine.
