That article has a lot of good information in it.

Yup, that's the article I had in mind when I answered, just too lazy to actually find the reference :). Thanks for taking the time.

M.

I read it some time ago, I do love Google for research.

Linkias do not eat clams, I watch as my blue one climbs all over my clams from time to time and has never caused a problem in over a year. I usually have between 12-20 clams in my tank at any given time

Sorry guys, Linckia is reef safe. It does not eat clams.

Well smack me in the mouth. I think my starfish prejudice was taking over in that statement. I assumed a starfish with sucker arms was automatically going to pry open anything it can get its hands on, but wasnt positive on this one.

Thats interesting....maybe one day I will get one. I likes em. But my 55 is too small I think for a 1' long starfish.

Tackett,

I must agree that a 55g is a bit too small for a linkia. Maybe one day you will get one, though...to put in your 180g tank! :D

What...no plans on getting a 180? We'll see! :P

Sorry! Next time I'll try to be more diplomatic. Something along the lines: yes, I heard many times that Linckia will eat a clam. It is very likely, since it has about 1000 suckers that can be used to open clams. I don't have any clams, so I don't have first hand experience. My LFS lists them as reef safe, but what the heck - they want to make a sell. A friend of mine said that his Linckia didn't eat his clam, probably just lucky. Apparently Fenner and Calfo also got lucky since in their book they list it as reef safe. I'd say it's worth the risk :).

1' long? Where did this come from? I think that mine is fully grown at about 4" diameter. I never saw one larger than 5". The only problem is if it will have enough "stuff" to eat (whatever it eats). Do you have an established tank? If so, in a 55 I'd try one. Since the most comon problem is poor aclimatization somewhere in the chain, I'd either try Dr. Foster and Smith (assuming that they are more careful than others) or the LFS and ask them to hold it for one week...

Good luck,
M.
