I was cleaning my 30 gallon tank last night and I also cleaned my Ebo-jaeger 100 watt heater. I noticed some very, very small drops of condensation near the top of the heater. I have been running Ebo-jaegers for years and never saw this. This particular heater is one of the old green ones.

Is it on it's way out?

I'd probably change it as a precaution. Two weeks ago, I retired my 10 year old Visi-Therm (which backed up the Via Aqua Titanium that crapped out after 10 months  ) after I saw a bristeworm crawling around inside :? .

reefnutz,

Thanks for your opinion. I think you are right.

Have you tired one of those finnex titanium heaters?

I haven't tried the Finnex. I don't think I like the 2º F variable. I've read a couple of posts regarding issues with Ebo Jaeger's thermostat, but a claimed .5º F accuracy is impressive. I went with a 200W Visi-Therm Stealth. Shatterproof, 1º F variable, and shuts off automatically when out of the water.

<-- Just repalced my glass heater because of the same reason. I went with a titanium heater from www.bigalsonline.com so far i love it. The temp is spot on... and I don't have to worry about cracking it against live rock or anything.

Ya, I like the Visi's too. I have an older Ebo (with the blue top-not sure exactly how old) and it definitely doesnt stay within .5 degrees-I actually find the thermostat to be pretty screwed up on it-just IME.

I don't trust any heaters thermostat. Learned the hard way after I went through a WON titanium that stuck on and a Marineland (I think) that shattered.

Now I use the Won but I use it conencted to a Ranco controller.

How do you like the Ranco, BTW. I'm considering getting a dual-stage controller for my heater and fan, but don't want to sacrifice quality for price.

TIA

I use 50 w ebos in my nanos. I don't like that they aren't submersible, but they are what is available to me locally, so... that's what I went with. No problems with them so far, other than you have to remove them to clean the salt creep off the dials every now and then.

I have a 250w visi for my 75. I've had it since last winter when the heater that came with the system cooked itself. I have yet to have a problem with it, and had an easier time keeping the tank cooler this summer. Probably because it's thermostat actually works.

For my fw tank, I am using a cheapo TopFin heater, which... oddly enough, has worked surprisingly well given how cheap the thing was. And as cheap as it was, if it dies any time soon, I don't mind replacing the thing.

Jolieve, you must live in Canada. Ebos are perfectly submersible...all over the world but Canada. Apparently the CSA hasn't been bribed err, paid.

Feel free to submerse your Ebos...everyone else does. I've been doing it for YEARS with nary a trouble.

By the way, some ebos do leak near the top. Replace them if they do. Glass is, after all, just glass.

Titanium heaters are not available in Canada yet, mores the pity.

I do not live in Canada. The new ebos (which these are both are less than a year old) specifically say not to submerse them.

There were some posts on the board about ebos no longer being able to be submerged several months back. Check into it.

I like the Ranco allot. I got my dual stage at www.diyreef.com

I have the heater and a 6 inch clip on fan in the canopy connected to it. Tank is always at 79-80 degrees. You can set the heater to have a 1 degrees threshold.

I have a 250 watt Ebojager. It is off by about 5 degrees. It also has condensation near the top which has been there for months.

I emailed Jason at Premium Aquatics and he gave he his take on Ebo-jagers, Finnex and some other brands.

I have been running Ebo-jagers for years, but I decided to try a Finnex titanium heater. Will keep you posted.

The Finnex actually is much more accurate in practice keeping one of my tanks +/- 0.25 degrees F. It is almost too accurate. I also like the digital display of current temperature and two indicator lights telling you it is powered and coming on and off. Protection circuit will shut off if exposed to air or the tank goes over 92 degrees.

Can not attest to its long term performance yet but I have had it with glass heaters that leak and fail.

I have had both the older Green ebo jaeger (still used after 13 years for salt water mixing) and 2 newer models. The newer versions (150w and 250w) temperature fluctuated +/- 2 degrees. I keep my tank around 77.5, so at 75 degrees I started to flip out. Ended up getting a RKII and temp stays exactly at 77.5, +/- 0.2. I wouldn't trust any heater out there without a temperature controller. Have heard good things about the Ranco....almost got it.
