I have a 120 watt UV sterilizer I want to hook up, the input and outlet on it is 2". I have a few pumps in mind, but was wondering if anyone had any other ideas. This is the only item the pump will have to supply, the intake and outlet will both be connected to the 300 g sump.

UV is rated for btwn 1350 and 6500 gph, depending on desired exposure time. Around 1500-3000 should do it for me.

I'm not expecting to use 2" fittings in the entire system, so a 1.5" outlet on the pump will do, even 1" if you know of a pump that will do the job.

Thanks!

Scott

120W UV bubl! 8O
You need at least a Iwaki 70 to do 1500 gph with one inch, if you go anything more than 2000 gph, they usually will need 1 1/2 plumbing. IMO, you better off getting a pump for low pressure application, since the back pressure on a UV sterilizer typically does not get higher than a few PSI (but then, it really depends on the construction, and I never deal with any sterilizer of that size.), and you will be able to use less electricity (and add less heat) by using high flow, low pressure pump.

BTW, may I ask what is your setup? Typically, large UV is used on heavily stocked fish setup.

I have a 150g tank with 300g in the sump. I was thinking about the dolphin 2700, it's a low pressure pump with 1.5" hook-ups. I've never used a dolphin pump before, is it decent? My main pump for the tank is an RK2 that I've had zero issues with, but I don't want to spend $500 on a UV only pump.

What do you keep in your 150 gal tank?

(I am trying to see if you can get away with UV all together... it is not needed in most cases.)

It is pretty well stocked, must be a great looking tank. However, unless you often have problem with fish disease, I feel you may not need the UV. Is there anything in particular about your tank that you think warrant the UV equipment?

The problem is UV does not work unless there are sufficient contact time with UV. I do not know off hand how many milisecond is required to pass through a 120W UV. But there should be articles out there.

If you don't need it, sell it to someone who does. It is better than investing more money on the pump and jack up your electric bill on something that give you little benefit.

You can make a tanning bed out of that UV... it can tan 4 people at once ;)

generally, the lower the flow rate, the more it will kill. I dont think it will make a crap with 120 watts, it should irradicate about anything.
