WOW!

It's a 12" x 12" footprint, 24" tall. Single piece of Pyrex glass. Very, very tempting to make it a FOWLR.

This one has really got me thinking. I could drill some holes in LR and make a tower up the middle. At the bottom, the rock could spread out a bit and cover most of the base. I could drill through the bottom and have an intake for a pump that returned through a SCWD also through the bottom. It'd probably be easiest to set this up on campus in a lobby or something where it would be viewable from all four sides. Then hang a light above it and be done. Throw in a pygmy angel or some seahorses...

That's cool,,,,Looks like it'll be a bugger to clean!

I was chatting with Righty a while back about why there aren't any single-piece mold-blown or mold-pressed tanks out there.

Does the glass have an even surface and good clarity? Maybe it's the pic but it looks a bit 'ripply'.

It is a bit ripply. You can see by looking at the stack of handouts behind it. Yeah, it would be nice if more tanks were one piece but also smooth and not distorted. I'm really curious exactly what someone would use this for.

Looks like a big vase to me Matt. A restaurant nearby has similar ones even bigger than that filled with glass marbles and dried flowers.

Not sure why a vase would be made out of pyrex glass though. Also, I think Pyrex glass is tempered,,,, might be tricky to drill.

This would have made a great refugium for one of my tanks.

kinda deep to light. FOWLR might be the answer. Maybe throw in some shrooms for color.

I was thinking of going with an enclosed canopy and maybe putting in a Bodianus bimaculatus and Centropyge fisheri pygmy angel. Maybe some small gobies as well.

Yeah, if there's any coral they would be low light, maybe some shrooms near the top. I would just use some low watt PCs.

I just like the very unorthodox look of this thing. Apparently someone had it custom built to try and keep jellies a while ago. I haven't a clue why they used Pyrex though.

If you're going for unorthodox,,, maybe light it with vertical NO/PC's on 2 sides or even 4 corners,,, could be a neat project if you're the DIY type.

Always thinking about the next tank, eh? If you don't find a use for it, I could sure use it :). I could put it in between my two 29s and use it as a fuge or seahorse tank like you said. Rian would probably be ok with it if we went the sea horse route. I think your idea about the central pillar of rock would work out nice! With the ripply distorted effect you get from the glass, it would look pretty interesting.

It is a flower vase. The process that give you nice flat glass can't make anything more complicated than a panel.

My old camaro had a double-curve to the back glass and it was crystal clear. So I'm sure you could make some really cool shaped tanks. They'd cost a fortune though--not cost-effective by any means. :D

Well, I don't trust your judgement to qualify the automotive window glass is "crystal clear" due to your lack of certification in this specialty. :P ;)

My guess, since it is made of Pyrex, is that its orginal intent was for chemical storage. We used containers like that for acids and pickles in some of metalsmithing classes. We had them built and speced for us by our on Campus glass lab.

Talk about doing some fun DIY project with it. Perhaps a hold bottom center as a drain with small return(s) next to it then us it as the suport column for your LR. It looks really fun.

Good Luck

If it is Pyrex, you can use a match to heat the seawater directly in case you lost electric power, and have too much time on your hand... ;)

Good point. I may even use a bunsen burner! :D

The cool thing is that this will probably be in one of our "lab" buildings, where the temp is a nice and steady 74 or so. The pumps and lights heat it up just enough. Our tropical tanks don't have heaters or chillers. Our temperate tanks have chillers to keep the temp around 55 or so. So basically all I need is one pump to set up this tank. I'll update with pics. :D :D

Aren't Via-Aqua tanks that?

One of the issues of Coral magazine had a design for a nano that had the filtration coming up through the rock...you may wanna check it out as it had some great info on the subject.

I think it'd make a sweet seahorse tank...stick some cool corals on the sides of your center rock tower...
