I agree with you the methods plosted here and elsewhere are expensive. I feel your pain.

Your 50g could be setup for less that $150-200 and cost much less to maintain. But then those methods are not the ones currently in vogue and posted here.

I hope you find something you can afford and enjoy.

supa, i am in the same boat. I"m really wondering if I want to set up the 20 gal I have built and ready to go. I've got a 10 gal at my ex's place untill my current tour ends. When I find an apartment, I'll either move the 10 into the 20, or sell the inhabatants and put all of it in storage untill I can afford to set it up and maintain it. I've got all the hardware. so why sell it? I won't get nearly what I paid for any of it. so why sell it? just put it away untill I can use it.

Can easily be done, but when I moved and let my buddy watch the fish at his house and 4 of them died I have had no money to restock.

NOw I have a 50 gal with 2 fish and need to change lights (easily $50)

It was doing great then I had to move. Now I feel like just throwing in the towel for a bit until I can get to a less expensive place.

Been there.
Consider even a smaller nano. Just as rewarding, and much less trouble/cost.

For corals yes. For fish your limited to maybe one or two depending on the fish

How much is downsizing going to save you? You already own the 'reef stuff'. Just stay FOWLR, or use what you have and don't bother upgrading anything for bit? Why do you 'need' to change lights - do you really 'need ' to?

Old LIghts are much dimmer and can cause a low light algea bloom (Diatoms) and if you have any photosyntheitc corals they depend greatly on this as part of their foodsource . I already do have the "Reef Stuff" but the problem as I stated earlier is that there are only 2 fish in this tank and no $$ to get any more. Downsizing would limit the amount of livestock I would be able to put in a tank therby reducing the amount of money I would spend to restock a tank. It also gets rid of the temptation of putting one more fish in a tank that I shouldnt be spending money on.

I dunno maybe I'll just leave it like it is for a bit and clean the glass more often and hopefully a nice holiday bonus comes along.

I have thought of this same thing many times. Giving up to save money.

My 75G is costly, the RODI filters clog way more than I thought they would and MH lights are expensive, electric bill... woooo boy!

If you still like the aquarium.. I agree. go to the LFS and ask if they will store credit you for some of what you have... kepp a sand bed and all going.. trade in your Corals for the lights, consider fish only or FOWLR. you can cut the lighting down.

I'm looking at my Xenias supporting my whole tank right now. I found a place that will give me store credit for attached Xenias... I can't slow them down... the trade in value stinks, but I have more xenias than I can use, and need new bulbs too. So I make my own rocks or buy blanks dry rock.. let them grow onto whatever I got zip a little more store credit.. they mark way up make money, I keep my tank healthy.

You may find the tank just starts taking care of itself. Especially if you just clean the front glass. And in time you will need to clean the glass less and less often. And you may not need someone to come in a fish sit while you are gone for a week or two.

Go fish only. Its the lights that knock me out.

i agree, i had FOWLR for years cheap lighting, cheap skimmer, DIY sump. A 50gal to 20gal won't really save you much, you can use the same equipment if going FO or FOWLR. If you downsize you're always gonna think of the tank you had when you want to buy another fish and cant "fit" it in. IMO

Yea, i third the go fish only option. You could even use T5's, have soft corals, shrooms and polyops, its the SPS that make the expense's.
