i bought a hippo tang yesterday and acclimated him and the let him go in my sump and he laid on his side for a while till i turned the lights on then slowly he started moving around and exploring . by the end of the night he was doing really well. this moorning i woke up and thought he was dead. he was on his side not moving. upon closer inspection he was breathing through his gills and not gulping with his mouth so i thin hes breathing ok. but even know 2 hrs later withthe lights on hes still not swimming jutst laying on his side, sometimes scoots round on his side buut not much movemetn. i know hippos do this but i didnt think it was to think extent. is he ok?? he look really healthy.beautiful colors.

Does he have enough rock in the tank to completely conceal himself if he wants to? My hippo tang seems to really appreciate this, they are, in my experience, more skittish than other tangs.

I occasionally see mine do this, it sounds like yours is laying about more than I expect though, even for a new fish. I assume he gets up and acutally swims about? Or is he always laying on his side? Eating well?

I would say this is very normal behavior for a new blue tang. Give him a week or two and he will be just fine. I don't think you have anything to worry about. Try to just leave him be.

Mine is sleeping went i turn off the lights by going to hide in my rocks. When the lights turn on, 3 minutes after, he is swimming everywhere. I think its normal.

I bought one a week ago and mine does the same, at first I thought he was dead and I put the flash light on him and he scooted out of the hole, then back again later to sleep on his side, really cool actually. been watchin me sleep i think and thought what the hell!

just normal behaviour as far as i have read.

My hippo/regal tang, Leroy, hides under rock at bed time and comes out in the morning when he feels like it. It really depends on his mood. :D

Also, when I need to get into the tank for cleaning or maintenance, he hides under the rock. Very normal behavior. Give yours another day or 2 to acclimate.
