Does anyone have an opinion as to the best macroalgae to use in a refugium, including mangroves? The whole caluerpa going sexual thing is a bit too much to deal with. Thanks for the input
If I wanna drop it right in my nano, will it choke it out fast? I realy would like to have some plant looking stuff other than corals going on. If I could maybe get away with pruning it once a week during maintenance, that would be great.
IME not to fast. I had some in a 2.5 and had to prune it about monthly. By the end of the month it was a tree though. It was great watching my blue leg climb around in a tree of the stuff. I always tore it out and fed it to my 210. Foxface and tangs love it.......

I suck at IDing algae but would guess this would be something in the Genus: Dictyota and quite possibly Species: cervicornis. There are 83 current species of Dictyota though.
This is not a pic of D. cervicornis but of D. crenulata so at least you can see the structure of it. There don't seem to be any working pics of D. cervicornis on the internet at the moment. :?
I personally love gracilaria. You can get it from marinedepotlive or liveaquaria for six or seven bucks. It floats around in pieces in a refugium so its easy to remove, never had it go asexual, supposedly tangs love it (though I've never had a tang to feed it to), and its really pretty. I've also heard really good things about chaetamorpha as long as its not in the main tank. In the main tank it overgrows things fast. But this is just hearsay, I've never used it myself.
I'm pretty sure it isn't codium. The pictures I've seen of codium were green and the stems were much more rounded. Also codium is reported to be difficult to maintain in the aquarium(Fossa& Nilsen The Modern Coral Reef Aquarium Vol. I)This stuff is very easy to keep.

Here is a couple more pictures of it attached to rocks. It does appear to be similar in structure to the Dictyota picture David posted. I believe it came in on Fiji rock.

I have great success with Chaetomorpha for good nutrient export, i have it it my ecosystem and have 0 nitraits, plus it doesn't go sexual.
