It's a green Carpet Anemone, 11" the seller has had it for a year and says it's healthy, that's all I know. I've been wanting one, but I understand they are poisonous. I have a 180 g with 3 x 175 MH, should I go for it? I got about an hour to decide.....

Based on what you just told us I would say no. You need to thoroughly understand the needs of any critter you purchase before hand. Anemones are very capable of living over 100 years. Are you prepared to care for it that long, if it manages to survive in your tank?

Sorry to come off so harsh.

David Mohr

If I had the anti-aging formula I wouldn't look the way I do.
Start with Daphne Fautin's book "Anemonefish and Their Host Anemones".
Then read all you can on the species of Carpet Anemone you want to purchase, if you then feel that you can provide an excellent chance for the Anemone's survival, go for it. Pass on this one as there will be plenty more to purchase in the future when you'll be more prepared.

So, warum hast Du so einen scharfen Humor?
Mehr vorbereitet? Wie und warum? Mein aquarium sieht gut aus, alles blueht und gedeiht, was kann ich tun um besser vorbereitet zu sein?

More prepared? In what way? My tank is doing good, everything is thriving, what would I change in order to prepare for this animal?

More knowledge of this anemones full needs is what you need. If you new enough about the anemone to keep it you wouldn't have to ask if you were ready. Once you know all it's needs and are sure you can provide them finding a healthy one shouldnt be hard so there is no need to rush.

I think Ben did a very nice job of explaining my posistion for me. Read all you can and ask all the questions you can, when you've reach the point that you are quite satisfied with your knowledge of the animal to be purchased, go for it. You don't need our blessing.

btw Carpet Anemones aren't poisoness.

Respekt,
David Mohr

The proper term would be venomous, as it is not ingested, but delivered via neat little nematocysts.

I've never kept a carpet. I'm afraid it will eat my little fishies. :D

Heh, we actually have one Mr. Robert Fenner to thank for this. I remember while working one day somehow I commented on some poisonous fish. He quickly corrected me, pointing out the difference. Gotta learn something new every day! :)

A lot of people said the same thing, it eats fishes, the vast majority has nothing but bad to say....
Well, I wonder if this is from real experience or here say.
This was an Ebay transaction, so I can't back out. The seller lives about 10 min away from me, so that's a good thing.
I also have a 55g with a 10" grouper, now I doubt that anemone will eat him :)

I kept three S. haddoni for 4 years, unfortunately parts of Chicago decided to have a 3 day blackout in 100F weather a few years back, they did not survive. I know of a well known author that had his S. haddoni consume a 7" Butterfly, so yes it does happen more often than you think. I'll see if I can locate a link.
Good luck.

Carpets DO get fish. A 55 gallon is very small for a carpet alone, add the fish and I feel sorry for the fish. :(

Can tell you from experience... they do eat fish, and pack a mean whallop. Let one wrap around your arm, and you will see what I mean.
I had one for a couple of years with a porcelain crab hosting in him, he was cool, but there just seemed to be no limit on the size of fish it could eat so it had to go.
