What are all of you with aquafuge's using for a substrate. I currently have none and am growing several types of culerpa and chaetomorpha. The culerpa has nothing to grab onto which is causing some issues.
I would suggest going with just the chaeto, no worries with it going sexual and releasing its toxins.
When I had my aquafuge running I just took some sand from my main tank and added it to the fuge. You could always get some carribsea reef sand and throw it in....
I was contemplating ditching the culerpa. Its a pain. Do you think theres even a benefit to adding sand to the aquafuge? In terms of DSB, its most likly too small to make a diference. The Chaeto doesnt need anything to root on..
Instead of using sand I have a one inch layer of "crud" and small rubble peices that I was able to scoop out of a live rock vat from a local fish store. The pod population is incredible and it gives my caluerpa a place to anchor. HTH
