I'm on my four setup in 4 months and I can't figure anything out, I'll like it for about a month and then change it. And how do you guys set up the corals so they all run into each other, I like that look, Right now I have a leather coral and have no clue where to put it. Need help? Pics would be great, I would like to have caves and make it about mid way high in the tank. I'm open for ideas. Thanks Jordan
This is a great site by the way. Very nice people.

Jordan,

Do you have a picture of your current setup?

Corals don't really like running into each other. You wind up either with chemical warfare (coral WMD's, if you will) or physical warfare (stinging sweeper tentacles).

They get large with feeding, light, and age (depending on the coral). Then, they run into each other :)

I really don't like rearranging LR unless absolutely necessary. The basic rule of thumbs for arranging LR is more a 'negative' rule than a 'positive' one. The 'negative' being "don't stack your LR like a brick wall, and don't heap it together like a big pile." Stacking the rock so pointy edges dig into crevices, forming an airy, open structure with caves, crevices, nooks, crannies, canyons, etc. is considered good. But this requires reasonably irregularly shaped rocks. Another 'negative' rule is "don't stack the rock with small rock underneath and big rock on top unless you want the whole pile to collapse unceremoniously" :)

Stacking like Stonehenge is probably good. If you have glass tanks, I like taking a large slab-like piece, and lean it against the back wall, to create a natural hiding place for my fish. I like creating large piles in the middle so that the fish can swim around the piles (like a Fig. 8...). I think if you click on my profile, you can find my web site, and I think I posted there an old picture of my tank.

Regards,

Hy

i got my live rock arranged almost like a stone wall near the back of my tank.. small nooks/holes here and there.. but looks awesome. and to your point, it's easier to put corals closer together... while trying not to put them too close..

OK :?

All I can say to you is: don't be affraid to lean rocks up against the back and/or side glass to get better height...it angles the whole structure back and lets you put corals top, mid, and sand level.
Start just forward of the bottom center and then stack back until you get to the top, which may or maynot lean against the back.

This makes it a little harder to clean the back glass (but who does that anyhow  ), but it makes a safe darker place for your fish to hide...and fish that feel safe come out a lot more than scared fish.

Good Luck

I see your trouble now...

The bubble, and any LPS, can be glued with crazy glue gel to any rock you want. It won't fall that way and if you want to remove it, a little tug will get off (don't use too much glue of course).

Depending on your light, the leather will be good near the bottom front of the structure. I have a lot of light, so I wedged the base of my large devil's hand leather under the front of a rock in the sand and it angled itslef out and up. Looks great there. I had a lot of trouble when I tried to put it in the rocks up higher.

But if you absolutely need it higher up because of light, you might try finding a large snail shell or a finger like rock that would fit into your rockwork nicely and then sewing the base of the leather onto it with fishing line. Once the leather grabs on, you can put it in a higher current area and wedge whatever it's attached to into a crevace in the rocks.
