Is it healthy to do? I was just thinking that if water from Kent RO/DI unit was safe to drink, it really would pay for itself in no time.

wouldnt that be good? i mean i guess if theres certain things your only getting from your drinking water it would be bad... but if you had a balanced diet i wouldnt see it as being a problem, also tasty.

It is perfectly fine to drink -- as long as you eat a normal, balanced diet. RO/DI water, in fact, makes the best coffee you have ever tasted as well as tea, kool aid...etc. As part of the western world, we have no problem ingesting more than enough salt and trace elements in our everyday lives!

Oh, I never considered the aspect of missing electrolytes from water after the filtration process as being a reason that one shouldn't drink the water. That is pretty silly :) Rather I was wondering whether the filtration systems used for aquariums may leave stuff in the water that can harm humans.

RO/DI water makes nasty, foul coffee. All you need for good coffee is 100% Kona beans, freshly ground, and most any spring water. Don't drink that garbage, save it for the fish.

RO water is good to drink...RO units were designed for drinking water originally.. Its not a Marine thing...you can buy RO units at Home Depot and Lowes and probably other places outside the aquaria genre...

RO water makes great tea and coffee. I don't think anyone will debate that.

RO/DI is not for human consumption unless you have different DI resin than what most reefer use. This issue come up many times. It is a waste of money, and silly at best. The electrolyte issue is also silly.

As part of our work training week a character was brought in to talk about work/life balance. He then went off on a tangent about the evils of bottled water and how since it doesn't have anything in it, it must suck all the minerals about of your body. He also went on about how sleeping on a box spring mattress sucks the energy out of your body (the metal springs) and cause you the wake up tired.

Between the clown nose / pool noddle section, it was quite the week.

Well, lucky for us our bodies can control intra and extracellular electrolyte gradients and then the different segments of the kidney nephrons can preserve or excrete electrolytes as needed.

DI resin gives the water a foul taste. The ro water it produces is fine to drink just not with the di resin in.

RO/DI water isn't chlorinated, my friends. Unless you're keeping it in a sterile container and using rubber gloves when you touch it, etc., it's loaded with bacteria, other microbes. Won't hurt your fish, not fine for you and me, IMO.

Maybe it's just me, I keep my RODI in a dusty old tub.

actually... its not loaded with bacteria for one simple reason... theres nothing in it... theres nothing for bacteria to grow on, i dont see this as being an issue...

i don't drink the RO water out of my collection bin just because dust and cat hair and junk finds its way in there. empty your bin once and clean it out. blech!

RO water is fine to drink. if your water tastes like DI resin, something's wrong with your DI media. also the electrolyte thing is bunk ... you get them from other stuff like juice or meals etc in addition to water ... what i do is just stick the return in a gallon jug every so often. i use it for cooking water, or ice cube water etc. very clean. makes whatever you cook taste so pure!

shroom,
Run your finger along the side of your RODI container. That slimy film is bacteria.

Take some water out, and put it under a microscope if you like. It has bacteria in it. Maybe "loaded" wasn't the correct term, but any at all is reason enough for me not to drink it. If your hands have ever come in contact with the inside of the container, if dust can get inside, basically if there's any way of contamination at all, it will happen.

Wow, that's a lot of disscusion over drinking water! If RO water is the worst thng I put into my body, I'll consider myself lucky. I can't speak about the DI but as far as the RO, it's better than the plain well water coming out of my tap.
