None of those pictures seem like "war".

The "hermit crabs trading shells" one is war (i voted for it), and there is one of a coral fighting another coral, and some of corals eating dead fish (predation), but mostly you are right.

Then again, art is subjective to the viewer. Maybe the photographer saw something warlike in each shot. *shrug*

'War' is the title of the contest, but the description of the contest says:"We're looking for photos that show some sort of aggressive display, be it a fish flaring its fins in a territorial dispute or a coral with stinging sweepers on the prowl. "

Hwarang, how did you vote if we haven't reached that point in the contest yet?

Given the actual definition of the word 'war' I am not sure if any of our creatures can actually partake in it:

war Pronunciation Key (wôr)
n.

1.
1. A state of open, armed, often prolonged conflict carried on between nations, states, or parties.
2. The period of such conflict.
3. The techniques and procedures of war; military science.
2.
1. A condition of active antagonism or contention: a war of words; a price war.
2. A concerted effort or campaign to combat or put an end to something considered injurious: the war against acid rain.

I don't think that this topic for the photo contest was bad.........I just think that the people who posted the pictures are reaching. Mkirda, Pineapplehouse, and Reefmon are the only posters that if you didn't have a title you would know what it's about.

I will post a picture of my tiny happy yellow clown goby on a coral and type in a subtitle that says, "He's fighting with his inner demons."

And secondly I know that everyone will say, "What about the frogfish pictures?"

They look that way all the time. It is not special. They were born with it. To look mean and ugly. There's the topic of your next photo contest. I will then post a picture of myself.

I don't think I completely agree based on the discription of the contest.

I think that is a good idea!

What open armed conflict do animals in our tanks have?
And is an animal stalking prey, and the prey running away a condition of active antagonism?

That is not "war".

I agree. I do however, think it fits the discription of the contest.

The contest seeks this: We're looking for photos that show some sort of aggressive display, be it a fish flaring its fins in a territorial dispute or a coral with stinging sweepers on the prowl.

Predation is not territorial, nor is it aggression per se.

1) The fighting corals by Pineapple House is a perfect example. Both are at war using weapons (nematocysts), and that war is occuring right out in the open.

2) No. It's predation, not active antagonism. If the prey says, "Ok I surrender, please stop chasing me.", it gets eaten. Antagonism in a "war context" is meant to cause flight, surrender of territory or a change in behavior - not to get eaten.

1) No, not gritty - only when one misunderstands the nature of what is being asked for.

2) Territorial "war" would drive the animal out of the territory or possibly kill or injure it, but not eat it out of nutritional neccessity. Wolves do not seek to drive deer out of their territory and enforce this by chasing them down and eating them.
