I just bought a RO/DI water device. It produces the water extremely slow.. is this normal? it cost me about 220 bux for it. and it would take about 45 min for 5 gallons of purified water.. does this speed sound about right?

Sounds worth the money to me. I love my RO/DI unit and it puts out about 50 gallons per day. Over 150 gallons per day is a lot. But the general answer to your question is that RO/DI units work pretty slowly.

BTW, do you have a TDS meter?

It takes awhile to make RO/DI water. My unit only makes 35 gallons per day.

Make sure to buy and use a TDS meter. If you don't you could actually be making matters worse by adding bad water.

Yeah I have the TDS meter and it says it only does about 35 per day on the box.. now how do you guys do a water change on your tank? Because im filling up a 5 gallon bucket with this thing and it takes forever.. What im gonna guess what you guys are going ot say is... the unit is hookedup to some kind of reserve tank that holds the good water. so when you want it you can just extract 35 gallons from the reserve tank. instead of having the make the water everytime i want to use it.. which is insane.. becauyse it would take all day to do a water change.. am i right?

BTW: my tds meter reads 350 purified water
and 460 unpurified

is that ok?

You get a garbage can, and fill it up, takes a couple days

you have something VERY wrong on your setup, TDS should be 0 on the purified side, or very very low if you dont have DI

is there a waste ratio adjustment screw? It should take longer than 45 min to make 5g of water.

I wonder whether your tds meter is calibrated correctly. Unpurified water (tap water I assume?) should not be 460. A very hard water location will give you perhaps just under 200. I've never heard of tap water being that hard.

Hmmm very possible.

So in order to calibrate it.. i need to buy some type of solution. Guess I should pick that up. Well.. does anyone have any advice on a setup for this thing? I really like the garbage can idea. But im still confused.

The unit is supposed to do 35 gallons per day. After its 35 are up.. does it stop producing water? or does it stop producting good water? I would hate for the garbage can to overflow or... bad water start mixing with the good. But yeah my tds meter was never calibrated. I thought it woudl of been out of the box. BUt maybe my readings are wrong.. 450 for tap and 350 for purified.

Also.. what should the correct measurements be.. Is there a write up for a tds meter and its readings?

Thanks,

My TDS is 220 out of the tap and 001-002 after the RO/DI is the best I've ever been able to get.

My unit runs 70gpd and I run it to two float valve and have a auto shut off valve on it. The auto shut off valve stops the waste water from continualy running when the good water supply is stopped in both buckets by the float vlaves. One bucket it 38 gal for water changes, it fill to about 33. The other is a instant ocean bucket witha float vavle halfway up which is used for the auto top off by the liter meter.

It does sound like your unit is improperly set up, make sure it has all the lines running correctly and the correct gpd reducer is in place.

Just get a new 35 gallon rubbermaid trash can and fill that bad boy up once a week or two and your golden.

You definately need to check your setup. You should have 0-1 TDS with the product water. FYI, most tds meters don't require calibration when there new for the most part. Also, you should buy a flush kit for your RO unit to keep it running an optimal and to prolong the life of your expensive RO membrane..

:) my tap (Well Water) is over 500 on my TDS.

Is it possible that he's measuring the TDS of the waste water? If so that puts his product GPD at around 40-50 which is much more likely for the cost of the unit. The difference of 100 in the readings could be attributed to the sediment and carbon filters, just a thought.
