I am retrofitting a 150 watt de (hqi) into my hood. I need to replace my acrylic shield that inserts into the hood. I have been told, tempered, low e, etc. What kind of glass usually comes with a mh fixture? I have a .25" lid now. Help!

I've normally seen them come with tempered glass, if I'm not mistaken. You definitely don't want to use acrylic. It will eventually warp, yellow, and may melt into that frost look.

I was told tempered glass blocks uv to prevent damage to people or tank inhabitants. I was also told that temp. glass does nothing of the sort. If it doesn't, wouldn't any clear glass do?

It seems to be a popular article in this thread.

It's a bit lengthy, but you'll get to the good stuff by page 3. There's also some specifics provided by a glass company of UV transmission.

All this seems to suggest that glass does a decent job of blocking UV. Regular glass would have the same property, but tempered glass is more suited for the heat.

Glass and tempered glassfilter the same amount of UV rays out.. Either will work for HQI. THe only diffrence is tempered glass is much stronger and will handle more heat.
