I'm looking to either get a 10 gallon tank to harvest some more of these guys or a place that might sell a good quantity that I can add directly to my tank. Need to fatten mandy the mandarin =).

I do already have a good amount of copepods in my tank but wondering if my new starfish is out competing for food. Also want to make sure the pod population stays large.

Any ideas on a place to order from??

THANKS!!

Unfortunately, I don't know any place that sells them in bulk. I recommend you remove your starfish if you think it's predatory.

Isn't there a few biological supply stores that sell copepods starter kit and such?

Coral Dynamics sells some live sand/gunk from their curing vats guarenteed to be full of pods, and bristkle worms, and all sorts of faunna. And yes if you have a sand sifting star or any sea star that doesn't have the limp serpant like arms it will decimate your pod population in short order.

Mandarins love Hawaiian red shrimp! I used to get these from Stockly's Aquarium but I think Ocean Rider has rights to the pool now. OR does have a sale on them right now, see http://oceanrider.com

Well, consider the fact that it is a space pet, maybe it is worth it to pay that much for them...

www.paragonsdc.com/ 1C1QuestArticle.htm

A similar ABS <Autonomous Biological System> was launched to the International Space Station February 2001, on a Russian Soyuz rocket from Baikonur Cosmodrome, Khazakhstan. As of the writing of this article the system has been living onboard the ISS for over 9 months. The ABS was placed on a dedicated panel in the Zvezda Service Module above the crew dining table. It contains an aquatic ecosystem similar to those flown on the Shuttle and Mir, with the addition of the small red shrimp Halocaridina rubra, or Opai'ula Shrimp. For the first time, multiple generations of several species of invertebrates have been accomplished during the 9 months on orbit

OR sells them 500 for $60 plus of course shipping. Stockly's used to sell them 100 for $19.95 postpaid, but I think he has lost access to the pond, hence OR exclusive.

Are the hawaiian red shrimp viable for aquaculturing yourself? I looked at the OR site and didn't see anything under feeds for the red shrimp.

OOPS! I forgot that many on this website might not be familar with OR cutesy names. :D They are listed as "RED IRON HORSE FEED". As far as I know no one has been very successful in home culture of them, they seem to have a low reproductive rate. In the wild they do under go blooms that turn the pools where the live to turn red with shrimp. Most seahorse keepers use them as a treat or vacation food. You might try a search of the seahorse websites to see if anyone has had more success. They are easy to feed since they live on algae and bacterial films, yes they do eat slime algae, but they are very tasty to fish life and quite bite size.

I think I asked this before, but don't recall the answer: will mandarins eat peppermint shrimp larvae? That would be a good source, but I'm concerned they might not stay down by the substrate.

420, do you live near the coast?

We are so quick to get after those that have Mandarins for their inability to eat anything but live food most of the time. Yet we feed them live copopods and such... What about the copopods and other "food" animals, aren't their lives just as important? Lets start a "save the copopod" club. :D :D :D

here is a suggestion 420. get a fuge for your tank and grow them in there. get a couple pieces of lr for the fuge and harvest them...i had a mandarin almost a year...i never had any problems with running out of pods, but he was the only thing that ate the pods to my knowledge..my mandarin commited hari kari one day. it was the first fish i bought and i will get another since in know i can keepem alive...and PopShawn...welcome to the food chain.no their lives arent as important...mandarins cost far more than copepods..

Yup, thats what God created, The Food Chain. He designed pods so we can feed'em to our fish. lol
