Has anyone ever attempted this? Rare livestock in the US is common in Asia as well as extremely affordable (rather it is extremely cheap).

Was wondering if anyone has thought about doing this? If so...how?

Im sure people have tried but I'm also pretty sure that it is highly illegal without proper permits etc..

What exactly are you trying to do? Business or for personal? Legal or other  ?

I'm just thinking about it...

Just found that the livestock is extremely cheap and wanted to see how it worked. Normal livestock is airlifted from asia to the US over a period of a few days anyhow right?

What laws are there? Are all our fish in the LFS actually tested? What are the implications of a fish that goes from one tank to another tank? I can understand if one is attempting to transport a shark or something dangerous...but clownfish or other small dwarf fish seem unlikely to cause concern...

Are the customs laws purely in place to protect the business? Or the specimen being transferred? I think it is the business...since the transport methods are not all the best for what I've seen into the LFS.

Over a few days, I sure hope not. The Longest we'll allow in transport to us is under 36 hours MAX, usually around 16 - 30 hours. The airlines require it to be packed for UP TO 48 HOURS.

Why would it matter about a fish that moves tank to tank ONCE its been cleared at the port of entry (you know, where they inspect the shipment, and clear it). Most goods are tracked after being cleared, thats kinda what clearance of goods implies.

All incoming livestock is subject to USDA, USF&WS and US Custom laws and inspections at the port of entry. No livestock LEGALLY enters this country with out being signed off at the port of entry by all three agencies. In order to clear livestock you would need to have your paperwork signed off by USDA and USF&WS prior to US Customs clearing your shipment. In order to import livestock you would need a business licence (or related permits), permit from USF&WS and documents from the country of origins ministry of fisheries or what ever gov. group takes care of that there. If its a CITES animal, you'll need CITES permits as well. If your exporting and importing of said CITES livestock, you'll need both exporter and import permits from the respected countries. Each exporting country has its own rules and regulations as well, they may require a certificate of health as well.

US Customs is the only one that has any hand in regulating business, the others are in place to regulate the importation of animals and food products as well as the exportation of. Livestock and food importation being regulated is a no brainer, its in place to help protect the citizens and environment from the importation of viruses (whats that poultry virus ripping thru Asia?), invasive animals, plants and insects as well as to stop smuggling of livestock into (what your talking about) and outa this country (like bear gall bladders for Asia).

If you think its about the business end, you haven't been watching the news for the last 100 years. Grass carp, zebra mussle, mitten crab, kudzah (sp?), west nile disease, mad cow, SARS, any of those ring a bell? Controll the importation and exportation of all wildlife and food controlls (to some extent) the spread of those things.

BTW, livestock is cheap in Asia for a few reasons, mainly freight fares. To get it from its source to Asia is cheap as it is right next door. Now to get it half way around the world requires quite a bit more. Around 3/4's of an animals cost in US wholesale of MO is typically the freight of the animal and related fees. Plus, its alot eaiser to smuggle into Asia then it is into the US. Smuggle goods don't acrue taxes, tariffs and the usual freight fees so they can be much cheaper (just not legal).
