ok .. as most of you read i had a problem with a speciman of xenia i bought last week http://reefs.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=48163 well .. the lfs sold me a new bigger one that looks much better.. although he seems a bit droopy .. in the store they seemed a bit more "erect" is it normal for them hang out? or should they be standing at attention? .. other than being a bit limp it seems to be doing great? ... i guess i'm just looking for some assurance that it's ok to be limp

Man, too many wise cracks come to mind, but I'll resist the temptation ;)

Since it's relatively new to your tank, it might just still be acclimating (assuming the water chemistry is in order). Shane also found that his Xenias weren't doing so hot because of really low ORP. I'd look into that possiblity as well.

ok len ... for the first time in a while i really feel over my head .. especially since i'm dealing with a weed  .. but can you explain "Oxidative redox potential" (orp) .. those are foreign words to me.

In my tank low alkalinity makes my Xenia lethargic (they quit pumping). I would bet you have some basic water parameter out. If the water is decent the grow like... well weeds. Also if they are disturbed it can take a couple of days for them to return to normal.

Don't look into the ORP too much, but there is an article on AAOM by Randy, if I recall correctly, if you care to read about it in all it glory. IMHO, alkalinity, mentioned by shellshocked, is a more profitable routine if you want to take a trip.

As Johnsteph10 said, take your time on this. Some Xenia needs lots of light and oxygen (it uses lots of ATP) to pump well. So make sure you have sufficient light and circulation/skimmer for it.

In the mean time, you can drip some purple pill... I mean iodine and it will be more erect for about next four hours. ;)

i'm abit concerned about your purchasing another colony so soon, and about the lfs selling it to you, as well

i would respectfully suggest you first read and research about a coral colony BEFORE you purchase it again, especially if your 1st experience w/it is problematic

did you try to return the 1st colony, or try to at least get partial credit for it? (it looked like it was infected when you purchased it)

oops- just read the rest of your initial thread.

fwiw-

i placed a pulsing xenia frag in a 20 long nano, w/2x175 watt 10khalides.within one week, i had two temp spikes that brought the tank close to 90°!!

the colony came through like a champ :D

i've never used iodine for xenia's in lfs's i've worked in, or at home, and i'm personally convinced that a good stable alk level is key to it's success, or at least a key preventative against it's failure
