This all comes down to human nature, mostly male nature. We join car Clubs, Reef Clubs, all this stuff because we have an interest AND because we like to wave our stuff in front of the neighbors. People get a lot of advice to go for the highest lighting because other people either wish they had it, or spent a lot of money to figure out what they want.
Anyone in this hobby knows that in a few months time we'll grow bored of our anthelia, and realizing there are more challenges/exotic species, well, we want to push the envelope.
I mean really, could any of you be truly happy with an anthelia and mushroom patch? We all pine for 500 gallons. Half of us would swinm in the damn thing.
Everybody really should start with MH, you know. It's POWERFUL BRIGHT TECHNICAL and we love it. We suggest people buy it because we have PC's sitting in a closet, or we have VHO that end up lighting refugia because we saw the need for more light (POWER)
It's psychology. I bought a CSL smart light....then a hamilton 175
Now I am the proud owner of a 250 PFO HQI with an IceCap E-Ballast. I'ts a bug, and a money pit. I have caught it and I am so very happy, and even my wife, who does not understand, can see I'm interested in something IMPORTANT ( at least to me)
It's just another way for us to really enjoy life more and keep our minds working in tip top shape.
I'm sure you could drive a hundred miles per hour in a Ford Focus, but 175 in an F-1 McClaren really is the way to go, you know.
I'm a tattoo artist, in an industry that has 1000% growth in 6 years. This is fueled by people wanting more and better for no reason but self-aggrandizement. Because there is talent out there, the art chnges for the better.
Reefing is the same. Everyone wants better environments to watch and breed rarer animals, simply for pleasure and to say "I can do it" and to feel good about a job well done. Eventually this may lead to major breakthroughs in aquaculture and preservation and replanting of native reefs.
Keep pushing the envelope in reefing, it could one day save nations, and is already helping save a precious biotope. Whatever the motivation, it really is for the good of all......
....sorry for the long rant, now I'll go back to shopping for a beautiful aquacultured acro so I can grow it out and frag it and share.
