More recently, I used to use a Ecosystem hang on refugium/filter on my 46 gallon - I broke it down last year and used the mud about halfway down in the sandbed in my refugium/growout tank. I am growing Thallasia grasses in there and so far so good but I have no idea if they are deriving any real benefit form the miracle mud scattered in the sand.
I have been running a 90gal softies tank for over 2 years using the Ecosystem method. I have never had cyno of hair algae problems of any kind and everything has flourished. I was so pleased with the results that when I setup my new 210gal this summer I used a DIY ecosystem for it also. So far, I have nothing but success in this tank also. It's a mixed reef with clams. Once again, I am more then completly satisfied with the results. I actually use straight well water for both my tanks and have only had one coral ever pass away. (Years ago I used to have a 55gal Berlin tank and it seemed I always fought with problems.)
When you handle Miracle Mud it is apparent that there is a lot of metal contained in it. A handful or a bag of it feels very heavy. If you place a magnet near it a whole lot of the mud will jump onto the magnet. I suspect there is a lot of iron oxide in there.
That is a fascinating analysis, thank you. The chunks of metal that leap onto a magnet look just like iron oxide nodules.
I have had close personal experience with a few Miracle Mud systems and am still trying to identify something about them that makes them superior to other systems. There seems to be a blend of voodoo and facts in both the marketing approach and with testifying devotees who are happy with their systems.
Mine 55 has a 20g DIY MM refugium and It does what it says it will, marco algae (culerpa) flurishes in my sump, lots of pods and worms too. My mandrin can back me up on that one. My nitrates/nitrites/amonia has always been nearly 0 and I have never had a skimmer. I don't keep SPS and only have a handful of softies that are all doing very well. But the most amazing thing is that in 18 months of service my tank has never lost a fish, never, I have never had a disease. It almost doesn't make sense because I had plenty of diseases come my way in all of my previous fresh water tanks. I expected it but to this day every fish is healthy and happy. I wish I had a better camera because they are all very beautiful fish.
