I have several RIO 800 powerheads (yeah I have seen the flames) they are compact and have a built in filter to keep my animals from being sucked up - I wish the other manufacturers would get the message. However they are noisy. Sounds like a vibration. It is definitely the powerhead. Anyone know how to quiet them down. They recently changed the impeller design - is that the problem?

Shellshock, welcome to reefs.org. This is no flame, but please throw those rios to the wayside. Mabe use them to stir your freshwater for water changing, but thats it. The maxijet brand PH's have a plastic type mesh to keep the critters out of them. Very inexpensive. A lot less expensive than the disaster that is fixin to hit you. And I promise you if you keep them Rio's long enough it WILL hit you. Just do a search on rio and read all the horror stories for yourself. 8) Happy reefing.
