In nature clams are frequently dug right into the reef, surrounded by encrusting organisms- so sponges shouldn't cause a problem. As long as the mantle is not retracting where it contacts the sponge I think its ok.

Not only that, but if you've got sponges growing, it means you're really good at what you do!

I've been debating whether or not to remove a sea squirt that grew just below the mantle of one of my maximas. So far, it hasn't caused any retraction.

I would try to ID the sponge and make sure it's not a rock boring sponge as those can be bad for Clams.

Got the same kind of sponges which I thought were a funky algae or something... And, I use tap water.

Not speaking about this case in particular, but I seem to recall that too many sponges was sometimes a sign of poor water quality. Anyone else heard this?

I don't see any signs of bright white new growth in the shell. Was it just hidden? (BTW - nice flat worms  ) Lack of any signs of growth could be a sign of a problem.

Can anyone ID this sponge? And answer the original question! I know I have a few flatworms, but they have to eat to. And I see a white edge on the clam. You may need to look harder dude.
