I have exploring the options of 400 watt bulbs since I want to switch from using radiums. I love the color to no end, but they only last 5 months at best and replacing them every 5 months is very cost prohibitive.

I just ran into something funny. A buddy of mine had bought Hamilton 10000K 400 watt bulbs a few months ago. He hated it because they were yellow/green to the eye. Same as an Iwasaki but a bit more faint in color. He just ordered some 400 watt Ushio and what he got was bulbs stamped HIT (hamilton??) 400 watt 10000K made in Germany. This is the same stamping as the Hamiltons!! He tried them on and they do look yellowish. He called the online store where he bought it and they tell him they are Ushio because Hamilton owns Ushio or something to that effect and it is the same bulb. It is very obvious to the naked eye they are extremely different than the color of the 250 watt mogul base AB 10000K bulb in his other tank.

Have you heard anything about this?

Where do you get your Ushio 10000K??

What does your 400 watt Ushio 10000K have for stamping on the glass?? Did they come in a box cover that says Ushio?

Can you take a picture of the stamping on your bulb and post it here??

Thanks so much for the help.

Hamilton does not own ushio.. they do however sell ushio bulbs with their own name stamped on them (private label) so the ushio 400 & the hamilton 400 10k are one & the same.

hi.
Sorry for hijacking the thread... I only used 6500K (Iwasaki) and 20kK Radium, and I wonder if 10kK Ushio will be a good compromise between the two in term of color and PAR?

Hey Robin,

Got any pics?
Reason I ask is for my new tank that I'm setting up, I plan on putting 2 sets of bulbs over the tank. A 250 watt Iwasaki and 400 Watt Radium in the same pendant (so the two lights mix, before entering the tank). I've seen the Radiums fired alone, and run the Iwasaki currently. I would just like to see if the two together look as good as I think they're going to.
How do you like the combination? Hows your coloration? I know of one other person running this combo, and they absolutely love it. It seems to me to be the best combination of both worlds (high PAR and high Kelvin).

Well, I can tell you both look different though. My buddy has the Hamiltons and they run pretty green/yellowish. These so called ushio he just got look a bit whiter, but still greenish/yellowish. The stamping on the bulb is similar.

If you want to see how they look, go the link below.

hi.
Sorry Mac, but I think I misled you. I am running 2X400W 6500K+96WPC actinic over a 60, and a 20kK Radium over a 110 ga. Not both bulb in the same tanh...

My 250's W 10000k just have a Ushio stamp on it, no Hamiltons/ Ushios stamp 8O. Here a pic of the bulb stamp. Ralphyhp

Thanks so much for the pictures. However, the confusion and problems are with the 400 watt Ushio 10000K, not the 250. It would sound as if it is no difference, but it is.

Well there is going to be an occasional lamp that fires a bit differently, it also depends on what type of ballast you are using (IE icecap or standard). Also, nipple orientation can affect the color on the 10k ushio lamps. Harker says it's nipple nonsense, but my experience is that they will fire less yellow if the nipple is UP on these lamps.
