Advances in Cool Plasma ICPMS have helped eliminate or reduce interferences caused by the argon plasma thus allowing lower detection levels for Li, Na, K, Ca, Fe and other elements that were previously problematic to test with this procedure.
They seem confident in their ability to provide results sufficiently accurate for our purposes when testing seawater.

Based on Mr. Del Prete's "S-15 report" and most of the comments made on his web site, I had often had reason to question his ethics or honesty.
I believe this to be an outright lie.
As I stated, I absolutely have not been in contact with him. Furthermore, if I had spoken to him I doubt I would take any comments he had "to heart" -- taking testing advice from one of the salt manufacturer's would be a clear conflict of interest.
Perhaps he is trying to taint our results before we even have them?

General update regarding the fund drive: There is one more round of auctions that will begin shortly after the holidays. We are 100% on goal with our funding target!
If anyone would like to donate items to be auctioned for the Salt Study, please contact len@reefs.org. The more funds, the more salts are tested.

I just checked your website and noticed that you named Marine Enterprises Crystal Sea Marinemix as one of the salts to be tested in the first round. I just wanted to ask if this will be the Crystal Sea Marinemix Bioassay Laboratory Formula or the regular Crystal Sea Marinemix? I believe it would be better to test the Bioassay Laboratory Formula as that was the one used in Shimek's sea urchin larvae study and it is the one that I and most reefkeepers I know use. One of the differences is that the regular salt contains a dechlorinator and the bioassay laboratory formula salt does not but there are huge differences in the claimed analyses for the two different versions.
Which one are you planning on testing? Because Shimek's study touted the bioassay laboratory formula as the better choice, that is the one that almost all of us are using.

What's the status of the study? I contributed (like many hobbyists did) at the start of the project and I can't even remember when that was. I know you've been busy with the move and all, seriously when are we looking at firm start date? :?

I believe the fund raising effort is concluded. I owe James Wiseman a call about the money.
After that, we start!
The only other thing I can think of that might slow things up a bit is that Oceanic expressed some interest in getting their new salt into the study. We initially did not want to accept any money from manufacturers in order to avoid the appearance of influence, but I think I see a way that it could work:
The salts we now have on the test list were choosen by hobbyists in a poll. The tests on these will be carried out with money donated by hobbyists. If any manufacturer that did not make the list wants their salt to be included then we will probably accept a donation from them to cover the costs of testing of that salt. Hobbyist money tests hobbyists choices - manufacturer money tests salts the manufacturer does not want to see excluded. This would also avoid any manufacturer whining - "How come we have to pay and Kent Marine didn't!!!" - because Kent Marine salt was chosen by the hobbyists and yours wasn't.
So I believe I will contact those companies that did not "make the cut" and offer them the opportunity of getting their salt in the test. Of course, we still won't accept salt samples from the manufacturer and we will fully disclose the sources of all funding.
This extra effort should not keep us from starting the tests for those salts already on the list.
