I think it's safe to say that most agree anything over 85 is truly hot. Natural surface water reef temps are said to be in the low to mid 80's (81-84) but I run my tanks cooler then this because the lower metabolism associated with cooler temps has lots of benefits for captive organisms IME.

cooler water temps are also better for O2 saturation... you only mention fish in your post. if it's a FO tank, run it at 78°-80°. this provides you some margin of error re: overheating and will also provide higher O2 levels for the fish which is always good IMO :)

85 will be OK. esp if it is for a short time. I would worry when it hits 87 and up. Add some fans that blow over the surface. Just be sure you have plenty of make up water for the increased evaporation rate.

I have a fan blowing on my sump right now (thanks to SBGRAD24's suggestions) and I have not glass top on my tank so eveporation is killer right now. I am going to get an ac soon and maybe a chiller I can get them at cost where I work.

Getting into the 100s? 8O What part of San Diego do you live in? It has been getting hot lately. Fortunately, I can keep the room with my aquarium in the mid to high 70's. If I didn't have that air conditioning, I'd look at installing a fan in the canopy or even a small chiller. If you have a small tank, you could look into the Ice Probe chiller. It's not too expensive, but it wouldn't work very well with a larger aquarium. At least summer is almost over.

I live in the UTC / La Jolla area in an apartment complex on the 3rd floor. It gets kinda hot and sticky out here in the high 90's low 100's. I do have a fan and am thinking of getting a chiller soon. I have seen the ice probes but I would need like 2 or 3 to cool it down. it only gets that hot for maybe an hour or two I am usually on top of checking the temp.
