detected stray voltage in the tank this weekend... small cut on my hand was how I detected it.... ouch! Poor fish and corals. But anyhow, I determined it to be the Rio 2500 that runs my protein skimmer.
So I'm looking for a recommended replacement pump. But one that's quality and quiet... not a piece of crap like the Rio.
Any help appreciated.

I switched form Rio to Maxi Jets and they work great. They're quieter as well. Pretty much better in every way.

I would switch to a mag drive 5 or 7. Maxijets are great for power heads but I wouldnt use them as a pump for a skimmer.

I have a Mag 5 running my skimmer ans a Mag 9 for my return. Both pumps are working great (up and running for a year now).

My return pump is a Mag 7 and it's been pretty good to me, but it is a bit noisy... a little more than the Rio. So I was hoping to hear from someone that may use other pumps.
IF not, I'll probably go with another Mag.

marko,

have you had any other problems with RIO. you're putting them down too soon. i'm not saying don't change, if you have'nt had any other problem with them, then what's the problem? i know they are not the best, but they work and they are quite!
p.s. if you don't have a grounding, get one for the little fishies...

good luck,

Wrasser,

I currently use 2 pumps and 2 powerheads in my 90 gal. The 2 powerheads (Aqua Clear 201?) have been running fine since setup about 26 months ago. My original return pump was a Rio. It failed (heated up and stopped spinning) after about 8 months. I replaced it with a Mag Pump that unfortunately runs a bit louder, but has been running without a problem. This is my second Rio failure in 26 months. Not a good record if you ask me. A few extra $$ is worth it to me.
Also, I did buy a titanium probe. Until it comes, I have speaker wire tied to a water pipe for now.

hey guys, i know that RIOs are not the best, i'm just going by my own experinces. it's like VW and PORCHSE. thay are made by the same company and everybody buys both of them. i guess you just have to pick what ever works for you.
( i'm saving my money for a 300+ gal. tank i will not buy RIO for this tank)

good luck,

I have a Dolphin DP800 for my return, and a Mag 9 on my LifeReef skimmer. Both work well. The Dolphin is easier to clean. I had a Rio fail, it wasn't pretty.

Regards, Eric
